Summary
The maturation contours show vitrinite reflectance trends and ranges for petroleum system horizons within the Southwestern Wyoming Province. The horizons are the base of the Niobrara Formation, the top of the Frontier Formation, the base of the Mesaverde Formation, the top of the Mesaverde Formation/base of the Lewis Formation, and the top of the Lewis Formation. The ranges of vitrinite reflectance shown for the Niobrara horizons are 0.6, 0.8-1.3, and 1.3. The ranges for the top of the Frontier are less than 0.6, less than 0.8, 0.6-0.8, 0.8-1.3, and greater than 1.3. The ranges for the base of the Mesaverde are less than 0.6, 0.6-0.8, 0.8-1.1, 1.1-2.0, greater than 1.1, greater than 1.3, 2.0-2.2, greater than 2.0, and greater than [...]

Purpose
The U.S. Geological Survey has completed an assessment of the undiscovered oil and gas potential of the Southwestern Wyoming Province of northwestern Colorado, northeastern Utah, and southwestern Wyoming as a task of the National Assessment of Oil and Gas project. Critical to defining a Total Petroleum System, its associated Assessment Units, and in assessing the oil and gas resources of that system, is characterizing the level of thermal maturity and hydrocarbon generation history of a potential source rock. These datasets show ranges of vitrinite reflectance, which represent thermal maturity, for each of the horizons.
