Wind energy offers the potential to reduce carbon emissions while increasing energy independence and bolstering economic development. However, wind energy has a larger land footprint per Gigawatt (GW) than most other forms of energy production, making appropriate siting and mitigation particularly important. Species that require large unfragmented habitats and those known to avoid vertical structures are particularly at risk from wind development. Developing energy on disturbed lands rather than placing new developments within large and intact habitats would reduce cumulative impacts to wildlife. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that it will take 241 GW of terrestrial based wind development on approximately...

This map shows all the places conservation elements. Some of the places included exhibit high biodiversity or ecological and cultural value. This map also shows other managed areas from the Protected Areas Database, as well as those that are excluded. Associated input datasets are also included; they relate to biodiversity, special areas, and development. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. The User assumes the entire risk associated with its use of these data and bears all responsibility in determining whether these data are fit for the User's intended use. These data may not have the accuracy, resolution, completeness, timeliness, or other characteristics...

These data depict the National Hydrography Dataset Plus Version 2.1 (NHDPlusV2.1) flowline representation of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System throughout the conterminous United States as of 2018. U.S. Forest Service geospatial data on National Wild and Scenic River segments (USFS WSR Segment) from 3/1/2016 were joined to the NHDPlusV2.1 to create the Wild and Scenic Rivers 2018 Linked to the NHDPlusV2.1 (wsr_nhdpv2.1) data. To ensure these data correctly represented the NHDPlusV2.1 flowline delineation of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, each wsr_nhdpv2.1 river segment was examined against the USFS WSR Segment data to check for duplication and/or omission of Wild and Scenic River segments. Spatial...

Dataset for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Areas & Herd Management Areas. Herd Areas were designated in 1971 as places where wild horses and/or burros were found during the initial flights in 1971. Federal lands identified in 1971 but not managed for wild horses and burros are called Herd Areas. As additional surveys were done and data gathered, it was determined that some of these lands and animals were actually on private lands and/or were private animals. Areas with private animals that were 'claimed' during the claiming period were not carried forward as Herd Areas. Herd Areas were carried forward in land use plans and determinations were made as to whether or not to manage animals on these federal lands. Federal...

The Wild Areas of the Northern Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion are those areas with a Human Footprint score equal to or less that 10 (HF <= 10). These are the 10% wildest, or least human influenced places in the ecoregion. The Human Footprint (HF) of the Northern Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion measures the extent and relative intensity of human influence on terrestrial ecosystems at a resolution of 90 m using best available data sets on human settlement (population density, dwelling density, urban areas), access (roads, rail lines), landscape transformation (landuse/landcover, dams, mines, watersheds), and electrical power infrastructure (utility corridors). The Human Footprint is calculated by assigning Human Influence...

Wild Horse & Burro Program Annual Population and Adoption Center Locations Information. Each individual Herd Area or Herd Management Area may or may not have been inventoried in the last year. Original HMA and HA polygons have been dissolved to create mulitipart polygons and joined to a population information table.

A polygon feature class representing the spatial extent and boundaries for BLM Wild Horse and Burro Herd Management Areas (HMAs) and Herd Areas (HAs), along with USFS Wild Horse and Burro Territories (WHBTs). HMAs and WHBTs are color coded to represent whether they are within Appropriate Management Level (AML), Greater than 100% and less than 200% of AML, and greater than 200% of AML. HAs do not have associated AML values, and are colored grey.

This polyline feature class depicts the classification of each wild and scenic river segment designated by Congress and the Secretary of the Interior for the United States and Puerto Rico. This layer was created by a multi-agency effort including the US Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Wildlife Service. The spatial data were referenced to the latest High Resolution National Hydrological Data Layer (NHD 1:24,000 Scale or better), published by United States Geological Survey (USGS).“Wild” rivers are free of dams, generally inaccessible except by trail, and represent vestiges of primitive America. “Scenic” rivers are free of dams, with shorelines or watersheds still...
