To help determine whether Hg had a causal effect on corticosterone, we investigated the impact of experimental Hg intake on the corticosterone stress response in captive juvenile loons. Juveniles were subjected to three different feeding regimes: 0, 0.4 and 1.2 µg Hg (as MeHgCL)/g wet weight (ww) fish. We then measured baseline and 30 min post-solitary confinement stressor corticosterone concentrations. The data set consists of times of blood draws and dietary Hg levels. Blood samples and data set were provided to the senior author for analysis.

This dataset is a component of a complete package of products from the Connect the Connecticut project. Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset represents the sea level rise metric based on a model developed by Rob Theiler and associates at USGS Woods Hole, which is a measure of the probability of a focal cell being unable to adapt to predicted inundation by sea level rise. Specifically, whether a site gets inundated by salt water...

Specifically, the climate stress metric reflects the 2080 departure from the current climate conditions that a cell may be exposed to in relation to its...

This dataset provides morphological and blood-derived physiological data from invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) captured in Florida. Data were collected on pythons at capture in the field and in varying lengths of time in captivity. Samples were collected immediately at handling (baseline) and 1 hour post-restraint. Physiological data include circulating corticosterone hormone levels, functional immune assays, and blood cell counts. Also included is R code ( Python_captivity_capture_code.R ) to replicate analyses used in the publication "Scales of Stress: Effects of capture and captivity in an invasive snake". For reference, the following data files are relevant to each section of the corresponding manuscript:...

These data describe tree mortality and the factors associated with tree mortality for a variety of plots in Sequoia National Park. Most of the data were collected between 2014 and 2017 (during an extremely severe drought), along with some comparison data from 2004 to 2007. These data support the following publication: Stephenson, N.L., Das, A.J., Ampersee, N.J., Bulaon, B.M., and Yee, J.L., In review. Which trees die during drought? The key role of insect host-tree selection, Journal of Ecology
As part of the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project (HSDP), an exploratory hole was drilled in 1993 to a depth of 1056 meters below sea level (mbsl) and a deeper hole was drilled to 3098 mbsl in 1999. A set of geophysical well logs was obtained in the deeper hole that provides fundamental information regarding the structure and the state of stress that exist within a volcanic shield. The acoustic televiewer generates digital, magnetically oriented images of the borehole wall, and inspection of this log yields a continuous record of fracture orientation with depth and also with age to 540 ka. The data depict a clockwise rotation in fracture strike through the surficial Mauna Loa basalts that settles to a constant heading...

Brown trout, Salmo trutta, exposed to heavy metals (mainly Cd and Zn) for at least 2 years in the Eagle River, Colorado, were examined for liver size and activity of the growth-promoting enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and compared to trout living in an uncontaminated site. Liver-somatic index (LSI) was greater for trout living in the uncontaminated site with the LSI of females being significantly greater than that of males. The LSI for females at the uncontaminated site was greater than that of females at the contaminated site, but males were not different statistically. ODC activity in the livers of both males and females was lower at the contaminated site. However, males and females did not differ with...

We measured environmental variables at multiple spatial scales and their effect on three physiological health metrics of ornate chorus frog (Pseudacris ornata) tadpoles to identify potential correlates of population declines. To accomplish this, we measured corticosterone (glucocorticoid hormone associated with the stress response in amphibians) release rates, as well as the skin mucosal immune function (combined function of skin secretions and skin microbial community) and microbial communities of tadpoles from multiple ponds. We found that water quality and land cover characteristics associated with environmental degradation, including increased water temperature, conductivity, pH, land cover, and development...
This database contains the results of slip tendency and dilation tendency analysis of Quaternary faults in the Great Basin region, including parts of Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. This effort was undertaken to help identify faults and fault segments that are appropriately oriented to be stress-loaded for slip or to dilate under the ambient stress conditions. Both conditions may make such faults likely to host as-yet-undiscovered hydrothermal processes. Slip tendency and dilation tendency were calculated for all fault segments in a publicly available fault database modified after the U.S. Geology Survey Quaternary Fault and Fold Database. This work was undertaken as part of the INGENIOUS...

The data contained herein are five input features (i.e., heat flow, distance to the nearest quaternary fault, distance to the nearest quaternary magma body, seismic event density, maximum horizontal stress) and labels (i.e., where known geothermal systems have been identified) from Williams and DeAngelo (2008) and nine favorability maps from Mordensky et al. (2023). The favorability maps are the untransformed predictions from models resulting from the features and labels used with either the methods presented in Williams and DeAngelo (2008) or the machine learning approaches presented in Mordensky et al. (2023). Each favorability map depicts an estimate of relative favorability with respect to the other locations...

The data are time series of laboratory strength and permeability measurements of 5 rock types. The tests were conducted as part of an interlaboratory comparison to determine repeatability of measurements using different test equipment and measurement techniques. These data represent the USGS contribution to the study. Other contributing organizations are archiving data sets separately.
Sarcobatus vermiculatus (Hook) Torrey is a leaf succulent, sodium-accumulating shrub usually found in saline substrates of the Great Basin desert, Utah, USA. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effect of salinity (0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mM NaCl) and temperature (day/night: 5/15, 10/20, 15/25, 20/30, and 25/35C) on seed germination. S. vermiculatus showed 100% germination in non-saline controls, at all thermoperiods. Percentage and rate of germination decreased with increases in salinity and few seeds germinated at even 1000 mM NaCl. High salinity exposure caused the loss of viability at higher temperature regimes, while some recovery was recorded in low salinity treatments. Published...
