Climate Change in the Tongass National Forest Fostering Strategic Collaboration and Informing Sustainable Management of Priority Resources

The Tongass National Forest has identified resources that are important to stakeholders and vulnerable to climate-related stressors. Cooperators will review an action plan and convene a workshop to be held in Southeast Alaska in 2016. The workshop will foster collaboration between scientists, managers, and stakeholders. Workshop goals include: sharing information about climate-related stressors and effects on NPLCC Priority Resources in the Tongass National Forest; developing strategic priorities for improving understanding, reducing risks, and increasing adaptive capacity and resilience; coordinating support for increasing knowledge and informing resource managers

Tribal Climate Change Partnership: Climate Science Connections Database

The University of Oregon Environmental Studies Program (UO ENVS) is proposing to work with the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative in support of the Pacific Northwest Tribal Climate Change Project, which is aimed at building an understanding of the impacts that climate change may have on American Indian and Alaska Native tribal culture and sovereignty. This agreement will focus on supporting the Pacific Northwest Tribal Climate Change Project and developing resources that foster partnerships, knowledge exchange and outreach opportunities between tribes, climate scientists and other climate change partners in the region.

Ecosystem Dynamics and Fate of Warm Permafrost after Tundra Wildfire and Lake Drainage on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) encompasses the southernmost, warmest parts of the arctic tundra biome and is renowned for its high biological productivity and large subsistence-based human population. Ice-rich permafrost currently is widespread and strongly influences terrestrial and aquatic habitats, including local topography, vegetation, soil hydrology, and the water balance of lakes. Ground temperatures are near the freezing point, however, and recent projections indicate that the YKD is poised for widespread loss of permafrost by the end of this century. Predicting Geese and Eider Nest Distributions on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta of Alaska, 1985–2013

To determine the current spatial distribution of waterfowl nesting areas and understand the importance of environmental variables in the selection of nest locations, we modeled nest densities for six species of geese and eiders that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, including cackling goose ( Branta hutchinsii minima), emperor goose ( Chen canagica), black brant ( B. bernicla nigricans), greater white-fronted goose ( Anser albifrons frontalis), spectacled eider ( Somateria fischeri), and common eider ( S. mollissima). Traditional ecological knowledge of Mulchatna Caribou Herd phenology, habitat change, subsistence use, and related species interactions

Caribou are an important source of food for residents of western Alaska, but as environmental conditions and migration patterns change, some local hunters have encountered difficulty accessing the Mulchatna caribou herd (MCH). Existing data describe MCH harvests, herd movements, and caribou abundance through time, but an investigation drawing from traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) has not occurred. Current Coastal Change Research and Priority Information Needs in Western Alaska

Research on coastal change in Cook Inlet and South East Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future work. The project proposed here will identify existing coastal change research in Cook Inlet and Southeast Alaska, and synthesize each projects focus, approach, and findings.
