This layer depicts the status, or degree of disturbance, to plant communities on the main Hawaiian Islands. To more precisely identify areas where native species may presently be found, a map was generated that considers the following three categories of habitat quality: High, areas dominated by native vegetation; Medium, areas dominated by nonnative vegetation; and Low, highly modified landscapes. The primary source for mapping these three categories is the HIGAP land-cover classification (Gon, 2006). The High category includes all HIGAP land-cover classes that are considered to be either native dominated or mixed native and nonnative in order to represent those areas that have substantial native-species composition....

This data release is comprised of a set of eight time travel map shapefiles (two tsunami inundation zones and four travel times) for use in GIS software applications and two population exposure by travel time tables (residents and nonresidences) for use in GIS software applications and other standalone spreadsheet applications. The travel time map was generated using the Pedestrian Evacuation Analyst model (version 1.0.1 for ArcGIS 10.5) from the USGS (https://geography.wr.usgs.gov/science/vulnerability/tools.html). The travel time analysis uses ESRI's Path Distance tool to find the shortest distance across a cost surface from any point in the hazard zone to a safe zone. This cost analysis considers the direction...
The occurrence of metals, such as lead and copper, in household drinking supplies can often be a result of the corrosion of pipes and joints in water distribution systems. One measure of the potential for water to cause corrosion is the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) (Langelier, 1936). The LSI is a measure of the potential for water to deposit a mineral layer (scale) within a water distribution system that can inhibit the corrosion of pipes and joints. Negative values of LSI suggest mineral deposition is not likely to occur while positive values indicate conditions favorable to mineral deposition. Negative values of LSI might be indicative of conditions that lead to elevated concentrations of metals, such as lead...

This data contains the height of shrubs found along transects on the south facing slopes of Santa Cruz Island, CA. It was used in the analysis for the Manuspcript "Long-term impacts of exotic grazer removal on native shrub recovery, Santa Cruz Island, California". These sites were sampled in 2004 and 2016 to gain a longer term view on native shrub reestablishment into exotic grasslands after exotic grazer removal.

This dataset (in ESRI file geodatabase format) contains inundation areas for various future scenarios of sea-level rise (SLR), groundwater rise, and storm waves at Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Four types of inundation scenarios are considered: (1) passive SLR, (2) passive SLR including groundwater rise, (3) wave-driven inundation during storm events, and (4) wave-driven inundation during storm events including groundwater rise. For each of these four scenarios, five different levels of SLR are considered: 0.00 m, +0.50 m, +1.00 m, +1.50 m, and +2.00 m. We considered each scenario at mean high water in order to predict inundation during the more damaging part of the tidal range. Each of the...

This cost analysis considers the direction of movement and assigns a higher cost to steeper slopes, based on a table contained within the model. The analysis also adds in the energy costs of crossing different types of land cover, assuming that less energy is expended walking along a road than walking across a sandy beach. To produce the time map, the evacuation surface...

Airborne Lidar Hillshade Images Depicting Fault Rupture Produced by the Mw 6.0 South Napa Earthquake
Collection of low sun angle hillshade images of lidar-derived, bare earth digital elevation models, 0.25m resolution, that depict fault rupture and ground deformation features, collected following the August 24, 2014 South Napa Earthquake.
This dataset is a list of variables (in columns) corresponding to nodes in a categorical network model. Geographic variables vary according to the specific climate downscaling model used to project plant species range into the future. Continuous variables were discretized into two to five categories as required by the model, usually based on quantiles of distribution.
We quantified the availability of breeding habitat of the endangered Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus). The species is thought to nest excusively in natural cavities within mature ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees but birds commonly occur in short stature trees that presumably do not have any natural cavities because of their polyploidal (many-branched) structure. To test this hypothesis we searched for cavities in trees where akepa forage and we measured diameter of each stem of each tree examined. The habitat is in montane areas of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Mauna Loa volcano. We surveyed 57 plots, 49 in montane woodland and 8 in closed-canopy forest. Six tree cavities were detected in the 214 sampled trees:...

This dataset is one part of a larger field dataset collected during March - May 2015 along the Sacramento River, near Colusa, CA. This particular dataset contains water-surface elevation and temperature data from 35 stationary pressure transducers spaced approximately every few kilometers along the Sacramento River upstream and downstream of Colusa, CA. The locations of the transducers were determined with RTK GPS with high precisions in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. The water-surface elevations were determined from the transducer pressure readings by using the nearest of six deployed barometric transducers, typically located within less than 10 kilometers.

This dataset is one part of a larger field dataset collected during March - May 2015 along the Sacramento River, near Colusa, CA. This particular dataset contains longitudinal profiles of water-surface elevations collected in March 2015 using high-precision GPS measurements from a fast-moving power boat. The GPS measurements were corrected to account for the offset from the planing power boat to the water-surface elevation.
We produced a series of maps of moist soil seed plants within managed wetlands in the Central Valley of California from 2007-2011 & 2013-2017. Moist soil seed plants, such as swamp timothy (Crypsis schoenoides) and watergrass (Echinochloa crusgallim), are a critical food source for migratory birds. Vegetation maps were created by classifying Landsat imagery from 2007-2011 and 2013-2017. A support vector machine learning classifier was trained using phenology metrics of moist soil seed plants, emergent vegetation, water, and other land cover observed via field surveys and high resolution imagery. Productivity maps of swamp timothy were based on a regression model of seed head weight with Landsat vegetation indices....
