This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides continuously-measured turbidity data collected from ten sites in Kansas and two sites in Virginia from October 2014 to September 2017. All data are reported as raw measured values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. Water-quality monitors were used to measure turbidity at hourly or fifteen-minute intervals for field comparisons and ten-second intervals for laboratory comparisons. This dataset includes all continuously measured data collected from eleven field sites and one laboratory site as part of a study to evaluate the variability in selected turbidity sensors and standards.

The dataset is composed of two data tables containing information from electrofishing surveys conducted in streams of the Adirondack region. The first data table contains information on the sampled reaches and the second data table contains fish collection information. Historical data (1979-1999) were collected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and contemporary data (2020) were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey.

These data were collected to characterize the quantity and quality of microplastic particles found in 17 streams in the northeastern United States, from New York to Virginia. USGS staff who represent the Urban Landscapes Capabilities Team (ULCT) within the North Atlantic-Appalachian Region designed the study and collected the water samples on which the data are based. Data were collected during 2017 and 2018 and included a baseflow and stormflow sample at each site. Additionally, the various microplastic particles in each sample were characterized by one of two different size-fraction categories (categories of 355-1000 micrometers and 1000-5600 micrometers), by type of particle (fiber/line, fiber clump, bead/pellet,...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The dataset is composed of four tables containing data collected during screening surveys for invasive Round Goby (Neogobius melanostomus) at 12 sites on the Eastern Erie Canal in New York between Oneida Lake and the Hudson River from 2016 to 2023. The sampling techniques and frequency of sampling were adapted over time to optimize the efficiency of the study effort. From 2016-2019 eDNA water sampling and traditional fish surveys using seining, trapping, and benthic trawling were conducted twice annually (spring and summer) at the 12 sites. From 2020-2022, eDNA water sampling and traditional fish surveys using benthic trawling and electrofishing were conducted twice annually (spring and summer). In 2023, benthic...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides phytoplankton data collected from Washington Park Lake, New York, during September through October 2019. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. This data release was produced in compliance with the open data requirements as a way to make scientific products associated with USGS research efforts and publications available to the public. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at six sampling locations at Washington Park Lake. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, and abundance (density reported as both natural units and...

On August 25, 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a bathymetry survey of a 550 meter long reach of the Black River near Great Bend, New York. The study reach began approximately 1,000 meters upstream from the State Route 26 bridge in Great Bend, New York. Depth data were collected primarily with a 1,200 kilohertz Teledyne RD Instruments RioPro acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with position data from differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Hemisphere V102 DGPS antenna (any use of trade, firm, or product names is for descriptive purposes only and does not imply endorsement by the U.S. Government). Water surface elevations were established using real-time kinematic (RTK) GNSS surveys;...

Fish tissue from 159 samples collected at four locations in the Buffalo River Area of Concern in 2017 were analyzed for a wide range of analytes including Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorine and other persistent organic compounds, metals, lipid and moisture. Over 230 analytes were analyzed in the tissue samples, including 160 PCB congeners. The data set includes a variety of laboratory quality assurance data including sample replicates, laboratory blank data, laboratory spike data, matrix spike recoveries, and replicate matrix spike recoveries.

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Tug Hill Commission, the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Oswego County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Tug Hill Land Trust studied the northern and central parts of the Tug Hill glacial aquifer to help communities make sound decisions about the groundwater resource. This child item dataset contains locations of aquifer boundaries for the northern and central parts of the Tug Hill aquifer.

This data release presents the laboratory and field results of a performance evaluation conducted on the Turner Designs, Inc., PhytoFind, an in-place phytoplankton classification tool. The laboratory evaluation included tests that were designed to characterize PhytoFind performance under a range of conditions that may affect phytoplankton fluorescence and sensor response. Laboratory tests included a range of phytoplankton types, morphologies, and biomass; water temperatures; and matrix challenges. Laboratory evaluations on the PhytoFind were performed at U.S. Geological Survey offices in Orlando, Florida and Troy, New York on various dates from July to November 2019. Data from a moving-boat survey was designed to...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing a polygon feature class showing the extent of the study area, the Binghamton East 1:24,000 quadrangle, located within south-central Broome County, New York, 2014-2021. The shapefile was created and intended for use with geographic information system (GIS) software. A companion report, USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2021-5026 (Van Hoesen and others, 2021; https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20215026) further describes data collection and map preparation.

This data release contains data from five seismic-reflection surveys in New York’s East River between Governors Island and the Queensboro Bridge. Data are provided in the original proprietary data format, a SEGy data exchange format, and as a shape file of locations and depths to bedrock. Depths to bedrock were derived from the seismic signal travel time and an assumed speed of sound of 5,000 feet/second.

Using a combination of public and proprietary historical construction test borings, recent exploration drilling, USGS observation wells, outcrops, and seismic measurements, a series of geospatial overlays for bedrock elevation and overburden thickness were created for the Five Boroughs of New York City, New York. Rasters were interpolated from a point elevation data set and refined using published and interpretive bedrock contours, and interpreted glacial valleys and faults. Contours for bedrock elevation were generated at 100-ft contour intervals and smoothed. This data release includes shapefiles containing the input point elevation features and output contours, and rasters of interpolated bedrock elevation and...
