The Well Cuttings Collection consists of well cuttings from 7,376 oil and gas wells in Virginia. This collection is available for study by scientists, citizens, government agencies, and by industry. DGMR is developing an online web-based application for searching and viewing the information about these well cuttings.

The sinkhole locations shown on these maps have been digitized and are available as a draft ESRI shapefile. DGMR plans to complete a quality control analysis and modifications of the digital representation of these locations prior to release to the public.

The Mineral Resources of Virginia (MRV) Program oversees the inventory of specific mineral occurrences, prospects, mines, quarries, and other mining and processing sites of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, and energy resources in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The resulting information is formatted for inclusion in the MRV database. The Coal Quality Data Collection includes results of laboratory analysis for 375 coal samples collected as part of a cooperative sampling program between DGMR and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The samples were collected by DGMR staff during the period from 1975 to 1988 from a six county area in the Southwest Virginia Coalfield. A total of 38 coal beds are represented in the sampling program. For each sample location there are laboratory results for Proximate and Ultimate analysis, ash-fusion temperatures, and major- and minor- element analyses.

The Aerial Photographs Collection consists of high- and low-altitude, black and white (B/W) and color (C) aerial photographs taken between 1936 and 2002. Flight coverage is mainly in Virginia, but there is also overlap into the adjoining states of Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. Photo coverage is not complete for the entire state for any given flight year. A minor part of the collection (<5%) includes infrared photos. The photos are generally in paper format and suitable for use as stereo pairs. Many of the photos were taken during 1950-60 as part of the U.S. Geological Survey program to photo-revise the topographic map series. Photo-mosaic index maps are unavailable for many of the flight missions.

ScienceBase brings together the best information it can find about USGS researchers and offices to show connections to publications, projects, and data. We are still working to improve this process and information is by no means complete. If you don't see everything you know is associated with you, a colleague, or your office, please be patient while we work to connect the dots. Feel free to contact sciencebase@usgs.gov.
