Description and data downloaded from DRECP Website: http://www.drecp.org/meetings/2012-07-25-26_workshop/background/Department_of_Defense_Materials/This information and data is provided in support of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan. Attachment 1 provides a Department of Defense (DoD) comprehensive matrix detailing potential military operational constraints by Development Focus Area. Attachment 2 provides associated conflict maps by renewable energy technology. Regarding the color coding:·        The red areas represent locations where there is a high likelihood of unacceptable risk to national security, and then technology identified might impact military operations, testing and training.Â...
We examined bird and bat mortality at a new 89-turbine windfarm constructed in an environmentally sensitive area in north-central Iowa. The windfarm became operational in November 2001. It is located in cropland between three Wildlife Management Areas (WMA's) with historically high bird use. In the past, migrant and resident waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds moved between the WMA's through the area now occupied by the windfarm. Studies of bird collision mortality in California and elsewhere raised concerns about the possibility of mortalities in this area. From April 15, 2003 and December 15, 2003 we searched for dead animals under 26 randomly selected turbines. Six 76.2 m by 3.0 m transects were maintained...
Until large numbers of bat fatalities began to be reported at certain North American wind energy facilities, wildlife concerns regarding wind energy focused primarily on bird fatalities. Due in part to mitigation to reduce bird fatalities, bat fatalities now outnumber those of birds. To test one mitigation option aimed at reducing bat fatalities at wind energy facilities, we altered the operational parameters of 21 turbines at a site with high bat fatalities in southwestern Alberta, Canada, during the peak fatality period. By altering when turbine rotors begin turning in low winds, either by changing the wind-speed trigger at which the turbine rotors are allowed to begin turning or by altering blade angles to reduce...
A visual impact evaluation method specifically designed to assess landscape alteration as a result of surface mining and quarrying would represent a fundamental aid for both those involved in the early stages of mine planning and design (mining companies) and those in charge of controlling and verifying environmental impacts (government authorities). This research is based on implementation of the visual impact indicator Lvi, which takes into account two parameters among those physically measurable: the extent of visible alteration in the landscape and the chromatic contrast between bare rock and the surrounding environment. Both parameters can be quantified by processing one or more digital images taken from the...

We estimate that from 500 million to possibly over 1 billion birds are killed annually in the United States due to anthropogenic sources including collisions with human-made structures such as vehicles, buildings and windows, power lines, communication towers, and wind turbines; electrocutions; oil spills and other contaminants; pesticides; cat predation; and commercial fishing by-catch. Many of the deaths from these sources would be considered unlawful take under federal laws such as the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. In this paper, we summarize this literature and provide the basis for the mortality projections for many of the apparent significant...
This report surveys the definitions of reserve services used in several countries and regions of Europe and the United States that have implemented competitive electricity markets. It also compares the technical specifications of these services. The systems considered are Great Britain, PJM, California, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium as well as UCTE as a whole.

This dataset represents the locations of existing and proposed industrial wind turbines and meteorological towers, based on proposals submitted to the Federal Airport Administration between 2003 and October 2011. Dataset obtained from the American Bird Conservancy website October 2012. All data are based on publicly-available permit data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

This dataset represents locations of wind turbines found within Wyoming as of 8/1/2009. The attributes are estimates based on information that could be found from American Wind Energy Association and other on-line sources. Turbine locations are derived from NAIP 2009 true color imagery and have a positional accuracy of approximately +/- 5 meters.

Electricity-generating wind turbines are an attractive energy source because they are renewable and produce no emissions. However, they have at least two potentially damaging ecological effects. Their rotating blades are hazardous to raptors which occasionally fly into them. And wind turbines are very noisy when active, a feature that may interfere with the lives of animals beneath them. We studied California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area of Northern California. These squirrels emit vocalizations that alert others to the presence of a predator, and so may be forced to compensate for turbine noise by modifying antipredator behavior. We compared the antipredator behavior...

Point Shapefile of Wind Turbine locations in Wyoming as of December 31, 2011 from the FAA Obstruction Evaluation Database. The FAA requires evaluation of any wind turbine over 200 ft. This dataset includes wind turbines from 2008 through 2011. However, not all turbine locations in this dataset represent turbines that have been constructed. Turbine locations represent constructed and planned wind turbines permitted by the FAA Obstruction Evaluation process.
