Chalk Cliffs, located 8 miles southwest of Buena Vista, Colorado, is one of the most active debris-flow areas in the state (U.S. Geological Survey). This "Child item" page includes videos of debris flows captured by one of the high-definition cameras at the monitoring site in Chalk Cliffs, CO. This camera (Wide-angle camera) is located near Station 1 on the opposite side of the basin with a broad view of the channel. The attached figure "station_and_camera_locations.png" provides an overview figure with the location of the three cameras and three stations along the channel. Video recording for all cameras is triggered using a rainfall threshold, derived from rainfall measurements from a rain gauge (Michel et al.,...

This "Child item" page includes videos of floods captured by one of the high-definition cameras at the monitoring site in Chalk Cliffs, CO. This camera (Firehose Camera) is located near the bottom of the channel. The attached figure "station_and_camera_locations.png" provides an overview figure with the location of the four cameras and three stations along the channel. Video recording for all cameras is triggered using a rainfall threshold (Michel et al., 2019). The complete videos for all the cameras are downloaded manually during site visits. Two marine geological surveys were conducted in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts, in May 2016 and May 2017 by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of an agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to map the geology of the sea floor offshore of Massachusetts. Samples of surficial sediment and photographs of the sea floor were collected at 76 sampling sites within the survey area, and sea-floor videos were collected at 75 of the sites. The sediment data and the observations from the photos and videos are used to explore the nature of the sea floor; in conjunction with high-resolution geophysical data, the observations are used to make interpretive maps of sedimentary environments and validate acoustic...

In this observational pilot study, we worked at the largest existing solar tower facility in the world (Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System - ISEGS) to assess the efficacy of using radar, surveillance video, and insect trapping to monitor animals flying near the towers. During week-long site visits in May and September, we monitored the airspace surrounding towers and observed insects, occasional birds, and bats under a variety of environmental and operational conditions. This dataset enumerates invertebrates captured using both malaise and funnel traps placed on the ground in the immediate vicinity of solar towers in the locations shown in Figure 2 of the associated paper. The locational information below...

This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release contains the data and metadata associated with the journal article. Parental incubation behavior largely influences nest survival, a critical demographic process in avian population dynamics, and behaviors vary across species with different life history breeding strategies. Although research has identified nest survival advantages of mixing colonies, behavioral mechanisms that might explain these effects is largely lacking. We examined parental incubation behavior using video-monitoring techniques on Alcatraz Island, California, of black-crowned night-heron Nycticorax nycticorax (hereinafter, night-heron) in a mixed-species colony with California gulls Larus californicus...
We conducted a multi-year study (2010–2012) to investigate diel patterns of specific incubation behaviors of nesting black-crowned night-herons Nycticorax nycticorax (hereinafter night-herons) on Alcatraz Island, California. This dataset includes hourly percentages of specific incubation behaviors (i.e. inactivity, vigilance, preening, and nest maintenance) from ~230 video-monitored nest days across 83 nests (18 in 2010, 30 in 2011, and 35 in 2012).

A new image is written with each rotation of the...
Chalk Cliffs, located 8 miles southwest of Buena Vista, Colorado, is one of the most active debris-flow areas in the state (U.S. Geological Survey). Three stations were set up at Chalk Cliffs which are located sequentially along a channel draining the 0.3 km2 study area. These stations are equipped with rain gauges, laser distance meters, and data loggers to record rainfall and stage data (Kean, et al., 2020). This data release includes videos of debris-flows and floods captured by high-definition cameras placed at two different locations, associated with the monitoring stations, along the study area at Chalk Cliffs during 2015. Both cameras are located near the Upper Station (Station 1). One is located at the bridge...

During week-long site visits in May and September, we monitored the airspace surrounding towers and observed insects, occasional birds, and bats under a variety of environmental and operational conditions. This dataset is comprised of the unedited digital video imagery we gathered during those site visits. There are four types of video imagery included in the data set: (1) "EMCCD camera" is the output of an electron multiplying charge-coupled-device...

Chalk Cliffs, located 8 miles southwest of Buena Vista, CO, is one of the most active debris-flow areas in the state (U.S. Geological Survey, 2020). This "Child item" page includes videos of floods captured by one of the high-definition cameras at Chalk Cliffs. This camera was placed at the Firehose Station which is located on the perimeter of the study area at the base of the cliffs and was used to monitor the impacts of cascading water runoff during rainstorms on loose sediment at the cliff base. The Firehose station was also used to constrain the sediment concentration of flows impacting sediment at the base of the cliff. It was equipped with a rain gage and video camera to record flow characteristics. See figure...
We conducted a multi-year study (2010–2012) to investigate ecological factors that affect incubation behavior of nesting black-crowned night-herons Nycticorax nycticorax (hereinafter night-herons) on Alcatraz Island, California. This dataset includes incubation behavior data collected using video-monitoring techniques, as well as explanatory variables (temporal, weather, and nest site characteristics) from 2011-2012, and includes data for 126 video-monitored nest days across 64 nests (30 in 2011, and 34 in 2012). This dataset was used to model two different incubation behaviors (i.e. incubation constancy, and nest attendance), with respect to temporal, weather, and nest site characteristic variables, and specifically...

Two marine geological surveys were conducted in Long Island Sound, Connecticut and New York, in fall 2017 and spring 2018 by the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Connecticut, and University of New Haven through the Long Island Sound Mapping and Research Collaborative. Sea-floor images and videos were collected at 210 sampling sites within the survey area, and surficial sediment samples were collected at 179 of the sites. The sediment data and the observations from the images and videos are used to identify sediment texture and sea-floor habitats.
