In 1991, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began a study of more than 50 major river basins across the Nation as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) project. One of the major goals of the NAWQA project was to determine how river water quality has changed over time. To support that goal, long-term consistent and comparable monitoring has been conducted by the USGS on streams and rivers throughout the Nation. Outside of the NAWQA project, the USGS and other Federal, State, and local agencies also have collected long-term water-quality data to support their own assessments of changing water quality. This record describes a series of raster’s containing mean monthly total nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrate atmospheric wet deposition for the conterminous United States. Wet deposition data were estimated by multiplying published surfaces of atmospheric deposition data (NADP, 2021) with precipitation data (McCabe and Wolock, 2018). See process description for more details. These raster’s have a 4-kilometer resolution and are in USGS Albers 96 projection. Units are in kilograms per square kilometer.

Soil organic C (SOC) and total N (TN) contents play a crucial role in sustaining agricultural production systems. Short-term (≤10-year) management effects on SOC and TN dynamics are often complex and variable.
