This dataset depicts roads built on the Tongass National Forest prior to 1960. This dataset is part of a larger analysis of road building and timber harvest on the Tongass National Forest, compiled for the report Scientific Basis for Roadless Area Conservation (http://www.consbio.org/cbi/projects/show.php?page=roadless/roadless.htm), pp 70-73. Road segments from a US Forest Service roads layer were attributed to the most likely decade in which the road was built, as determined by an analysis of connectivity to clearcuts on the Tongass National Forest from that decade. It was assumed that following 1960, harvests required access to mills or extraction sites, and thus roads connecting to them were most likely built...
Concern over global environmental change and associated uncertainty has given rise to greater emphasis on fostering resilience through forest management. We examined the impact of standard silvicultural systems (including clearcutting, shelterwood, and selection) compared with unharvested controls on tree functional identity and functional diversity in three forest types distributed across the northeastern United States. Sites included the Argonne, Bartlett, and Penobscot Experimental Forests located in Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Maine, respectively. We quantified functional trait means for leaf mass per area, specific gravity, maximum height, height achieved at 20 years, seed mass, drought tolerance, shade tolerance,...

This dataset records mortality-- including involvement of bark beetles-- and burn severity information for trees in long term forest dynamics plots in Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park that experienced fire. These data support the following publication: Furniss, T.J., Das, A.J., van Mantgem, P.J., Stephenson, N.L. and Lutz, J.A., 2021. Crowding, climate, and the case for social distancing among trees. Ecological Applications, p.e2507, https://doi.org/10.1002/eap.2507
This dataset is the largest global dataset to date of soil respiration, moisture, and temperature measurements, totaling >3800 observations representing 27 temperature manipulation studies, spanning nine biomes and nearly two decades of warming experiments. Data for this study were obtained from a combination of unpublished data and published literature values. We find that although warming increases soil respiration rates, there is limited evidence for a shifting respiration response with experimental warming. We also note a universal decline in the temperature sensitivity of respiration at soil temperatures >25°C. This dataset includes 3817 observations, from control (n=1812), first (i.e., lowest or sole) level...

These datasets contain the attributes of individual trees located in and around Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. Attributes include remote sensing indices, terrain characteristics, and-- for the calibration data-- tree size and growth rates. Calibration data (mixedconifervulnerability_calibrationdataset.csv) were collected in long term research plots where trees are visited annually to check for mortality and periodically re-measured for diameter to capture growth. Validation data (mixedconifervulnerability_validationdataset.csv) were collected as part of a randomized sample located within a remote sensing 'flight box'. Remote sensing indices and terrain variables for both datasets were extracted from National...

These data describe tree mortality and the factors associated with tree mortality for a variety of plots in Sequoia National Park. Most of the data were collected between 2014 and 2017 (during an extremely severe drought), along with some comparison data from 2004 to 2007. These data support the following publication: Stephenson, N.L., Das, A.J., Ampersee, N.J., Bulaon, B.M., and Yee, J.L., In review. Which trees die during drought? The key role of insect host-tree selection, Journal of Ecology

This dataset displays the boundaries of Intact Forest Landscapes for the islands in the Tongass region of the state of Alaska. Intact Forest Landscapes for islands are defined as areas at least 500 hectares that are absent of human disturbance visible on satellite imagery (e.g., roads, logging, mining, settlement). For more information, see the full report, available on the Global Forest Watch website (www.globalforestwatch.org), or the Conservation Biology Institute website (http://www.consbio.org/cbi/projects/show.php?page=alaska).

This dataset was used as part of a continent-wide analysis of tree fecundity and its association with climate and tree size. This dataset consists of: plotinfo.csv, which contains basic attribute information for the field plots where the data were collected; seeddata.csv, which contains the data for seeds collected (how many, what type, etc.); trapxycoord.csv, which contains location and identification information for the seed traps used to collect the seeds; treexycoord.csv, which contains location and attribute information for the standing trees in the plot where the seeds were collected; and treedata.csv, which contains data on the size and species of standing trees in the plot where the seeds were collected.
