The South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint is a living spatial plan to conserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. It identifies shared conservation priorities across the South Atlantic region. The second iteration of the Blueprint, Version 2.0, was released in July 2015. It was a completely data-driven plan based on ecosystem indicator models for terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments, as well as a connectivity analysis. Blueprint 2.0 used a 200 m spatial scale. With Version 2.0, the total number of people actively involved in developing the Blueprint grew to more than 400 individuals from over 100 organizations.

Climate change refers to change over time due to natural variability or as a result of human activity (IPCC, 2008). Alaska is experiencing a wide range of impacts from climate change and communities seek adaptive strategies that encourage wellness and sustainability. This report documents climate change impacts as described by local people and climate change effects or potential effects as interpreted through the lens of public health. It is the seventh report in a series describing climate change across Alaska, and the second report to focus on the Bristol Bay region, the first being in the community of Pilot Point. In the Dena’ina community of Nondalton, residents report changes to the weather, the landscape,...

An assessment of climate change impacts on communities in the Bering Strait Region was conducted by three tribal organizations, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, the Norton Sound Health Corporation, and Kawerak Inc. The purpose was to evaluate the broad range of climate change impacts observed by community members, to identify potential health effects, and to raise awareness and provide guidance that community leadership and the tribal health system could use to help guide planning and intervention activities. This presentation will explore the process and review findings from the project as well as providing an overview of some of the recommendations.

Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.

This project will use existing climate change scenarios and sea-level rise projections to create a Climate Change Adaptation Plan in collaboration with the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana. This Plan can be used as a model for climate adaptation in other small communities, in addition to engaging the Chitimacha through educational opportunities for children and adults, including an internship at the university- or professional-level; by providing data transfer of historic aerial photography, land loss maps, and other geospatial tools and assistance; and by facilitating Chitimacha attendance at Traditional Ecological Knowledge workshops at Oklahoma University and the South Central Climate Science Center.

This dataset contains population densities of 15 study watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia from 2000 to 2020. Population densities were determined for 2000, 2010, and 2020 from the decadal U.S. Census and for 2012 and 2017 from the American Community Survey 5-year estimates of 2010-14 and 2015¬-19 block group data, respectively. Population density within each watershed was determined by clipping the census block group data by the watershed boundaries and area-weighting the block group population density data within each watershed. Census block group data is the smallest geographic unit for which the census provides data.

The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the Federal standard for geographic nomenclature. The U.S. Geological Survey developed the GNIS for the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, a Federal inter-agency body chartered by public law to maintain uniform feature name usage throughout the Government and to promulgate standard names to the public. The GNIS is the official repository of domestic geographic names data; the official vehicle for geographic names use by all departments of the Federal Government; and the source for applying geographic names to Federal electronic and printed products of all types. See http://geonames.usgs.gov for additional information.

Prior research has shown that sediment budgets, and therefore stability, of microtidal marsh complexes scale with areal unvegetated to vegetated marsh ratios (UVVR) suggesting these metrics are broadly applicable indicators of microtidal marsh vulnerability. This effort has developed the UVVR metric using Landsat 8 satellite imagery for the coastal areas of the contiguous United States (CONUS). These datasets provide annual averages of 1) developed, 2) vegetated, 3) unvegetated fractional covers and 4) an unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR) at 30-meter resolution over the coastal areas of the contiguous United States for the years 2014-2018. Additionally, multi-year average values of vegetated fractional cover...

The identification of heavy metals such as mercury, and highly persistent lipophilic anthropogenic contaminants in the circumpolar food chain of all Arctic countries has raised awareness in wildlife scientists, and human health authorities on the need to better understand the possible climate-mediated influence on atmospheric and ocean transport mechanisms on the exposure of biota, including humans, in the Arctic. Certain contaminants are known to interfere with immune response in both humans and wildlife.Researchers developed a village climate and health impact assessment tool; identified climate change vulnerabilities for the Native Village of Selawik and developed a climate adaptation strategy; developed biomonitoring...

Ecological integrity of priority habitats was based on degree of local human development, amount and local connectivity of habitat, and quality of habit. Indicators were selected to reflect the needs of focal species, as well as other key ecological attributes of these habitats. Ecological integrity was estimated for floodplain forests, freshwater wetlands, human development, major rivers, rice agriculture, tallgrass prairie, and tidal wetlands.Ratings of each indicator are based on a viability assessment conducted following the Open Standards framework. Indicators with ratings of Good or Very Good are within the acceptable range of natural variation (with Good suggesting some management may be needed to get the...

The Urban Influence measure developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS) identifies metropolitan counties by population size and outlines where natural area and urban boundaries exist. This can help to indicate where increased stresses on ecosystem services may occur. The boundaries between urban, rural, and natural areas in Appalachia are increasingly defined by the accelerated demand for ecosystem services from growing urban populations. Increases in “urbanness” not only stress the capacity of affected landscapes to provide ecosystem services, but also magnify the pressure on nearby natural areas to provide those services to more people. However, opportunities exist for...
