WaSSI (Water Supply Stress Index) predicts how climate, land cover, and human population change may impact water availability and carbon sequestration at the watershed level (about the size of a county) across the lower 48 United States. WaSSI users can select and adjust temperature, precipitation, land cover, and water use factors to simulate change scenarios for any timeframe from 1961 through the year 2100. Simulation results are available as downloadable maps, graphs, and data files that users can apply to their unique information and project needs. WaSSI generates useful information for natural resource planners and managers who must make informed decisions about water supplies and related ecosystem services...

The American Community Survey (ACS) is a national, publicly available survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects information about population, education, housing, economic status, and more. Planners, public officials, entrepreneurs, and researchers rely on the data collected through this survey to help understand community conditions and to support community planning efforts.Seasonal homes are abundant in the Appalachians, and are particularly prominent among the more rural areas that provide access to the region’s cultural and natural amenities and scenic views. These factors, coupled with an ideal mountain climate compared to surrounding areas, have brought national attention and have made much of...

Inland HubsThese are the hubs used in the Linkage Mapper-based connectivity analysis for the inland portion of the South Atlantic area in Blueprint 2020.Input Data Rebalanced ecosystem integrity scores for each inland subregion The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Resilient Land Project TNC’s Secured Lands Database (External Eastern Division 2018)Mapping Steps Rebalanced ecosystem integrity scores for each inland subregion were mosaiced together into one raster. Areas in the highest scoring 10% of the inland 2020 South Atlantic Blueprint extent (based on ecosystem integrity scores) were identified as potential hubs. Outside of the 2020 South Atlantic Blueprint extent, we used local connectedness from TNC’s Resilient Land...

This indicator depicts the number of different stream size classes in a river network not separated by large dams. Reason for Selection River networks with a variety of connected stream classes help retain aquatic biodiversity in a changing climate by allowing species to access climate refugia and move between habitats. Input Data – Estimated Floodplain Map of the Conterminous U.S. from the EPA EnviroAtlas (see this factsheet for more information) – Other input for this indicator was provided by the Southeast Aquatic Connectivity Assessment Project (SEACAP). SEACAP identifies this metric within the category of “size/system type”. It measures the number different stream size classes in each functional network. To...

This indicator represents the amount of overall acres of forested wetlands currently present in the South Atlantic geography.Reason for SelectionOverall acreage of existing forested wetlands provides an indicator of whether forested wetlands being inundated by sea level rise are being replaced or restored somewhere else. It is also well monitored and resonates with a diversity of audiences.Input Data– 2016 National Land Cover Database (NLCD)Mapping StepsAny pixels identified as “woody wetlands” in the 2016 NLCD were considered existing forested wetland.Final indicator valuesIndicator values were assigned as follows:1 = Forested wetlandDisclaimer: Comparing with Older Indicator VersionsThere are numerous problems...

Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.

The Urban Influence measure developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS) identifies metropolitan counties by population size and outlines where natural area and urban boundaries exist. This can help to indicate where increased stresses on ecosystem services may occur. The boundaries between urban, rural, and natural areas in Appalachia are increasingly defined by the accelerated demand for ecosystem services from growing urban populations. Increases in “urbanness” not only stress the capacity of affected landscapes to provide ecosystem services, but also magnify the pressure on nearby natural areas to provide those services to more people. However, opportunities exist for...

This indicator measures the protected status or potential stress (i.e., shipping traffic, dredge disposal) of solid substrate and rocky outcroppings.Reason for SelectionHardbottom extent and condition is particularly important for a variety of marine species. Hardbottom provides an anchor for important seafloor habitat such as deepwater corals, plants, and sponges, supporting associated invertebrate and fish species. It is impacted by landscape scale stressors (e.g., water quality degradation, mining, dredging, and beach renourishment), can be monitored and modeled with existing information, and is widely used and understood by diverse partners.Input Data– The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) South Atlantic Bight Marine...

Developed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the LandCast 2050 High-Resolution Population Projection models future national-level human population densities. The models estimate the probability of a population being at a particular location, which measures where people will likely be in the future, not necessarily their places of residence. The LandCast 2050 data set is an empirically-informed spatial distribution of projected population of the contiguous U.S. for 2050 compiled on a 30” x 30” latitude/longitude grid. Population projections of county level numbers were developed using a modified version of the U.S. Census’ projection methodology-with the U.S. Census’ official projection as the benchmark....
