The U.S. Geological Survey collected multispectral and visible light imagery via a quadcopter, small unoccupied aircraft system (sUAS) deployed near Ashville Bridge Creek in Virginia Beach, VA. This dataset includes vertical velocity profiles and river discharge at the cross section of interest where velocity measurements were taken on the Arkansas and South Platte Rivers in Colorado and the Salcha and Tanana Rivers in Alaska. Each profile contains measurements from at least six depths across the cross section in order to have a full two-dimensional cross-section velocity profile across the river. This dataset contains data collected during science flights using the drone-based QCam, which is a Doppler (velocity) radar designed to measure surface velocity and compute river discharge when channel bathymetry is known. To support an investigation of the feasibility of measuring river bathymetry using remotely sensed data acquired from a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS), optical and sediment measurements were collected from the Blue River and Colorado River near Kremmling, CO on October 17-18, 2018. Optical measurements were collected with a WET Labs ECO which measures the turbidity and concentration of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and chlorophyll. Absorption and attenuation coefficients were collected with a WET Labs ac-s instrument. The concentration and mean size of suspended sediment were collected with a LIST 100X sensor.

This child item contains the raw acoustic Doppler velocity profiler (ADCP) and acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) measurements collected by U.S. Geological hydrographers at each site for the purpose of validating LSPIV results. In all field sites except for the Androscoggin River (ACR) and Agua Fria River (AFR) sites, the discharge measurements were collected as part of routine and standard U.S Geological streamflow gaging direct measurement workflows at established U.S. Geological Survey gaging locations. The dataset consists of a shapefile of measurements of surface velocity magnitude and direction at the Colorado River at Salt Wash near Moab, UT, on June 10, 2020. The dataset contains approximately 1.4 km of river length. The surface velocity measurements were made by applying Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) techniques, using overlapping videos collected by small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). Total time to capture all videos was less than one hour, and all frames (except frame 1, see Process Steps below) from all videos were used. Additional attributes, including divergence, curl, shear, and strain, were calculated from the surface velocity measurements and are included in the dataset.
