Hawaiian shorelines and near-shore waters have long been used for cultural activities, food gathering and fishing, and recreation. As seascapes are physically altered by changing climate, the ways in which people experience these environments will likely change as well. Local perspectives of how seascapes are changing over time can help managers better understand and manage these areas for both natural persistence and human use. Invasive species have increasingly severe consequences for ecosystems and human communities alike. The ecological impacts of invasive species are often irreversible, and include the loss of native species and the spread of disease. Implications for human communities include damaged water transportation systems, reduced crop yields, reduced forage quality for livestock, and widespread tree death - which can lead to increases in wildfire and loss of biodiversity. Post-fire shifts in vegetation composition will have broad ecological impacts. However, information characterizing post-fire recovery patterns and their drivers are lacking over large spatial extents. In this analysis we used Landsat imagery collected when snow cover (SCS) was present, in combination with growing season (GS) imagery, to distinguish evergreen vegetation from deciduous vegetation. We sought to (1) characterize patterns in the rate of post-fire, dual season Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) across the region, (2) relate remotely sensed patterns to field-measured patterns of re-vegetation, and (3) identify seasonally-specific drivers of post-fire rates of NDVI recovery. This broad-scale landscape connectivity dataset identifies areas likely to facilitate ecological flow—particularly movement, dispersal, gene flow, and distributional range shifts for terrestrial plants and animals—over large distances and long time periods. Similar to the local permeability analyses (3km radius, Buttrick et al. 2015), this analysis is not species-specific. Rather, it focuses on structural connectivity of natural lands, with resistance to movement modeled as a function of landscape naturalness. The Product: A Binational Database and Synthesis We are applying a comprehensive set of climate adaptation planning methods across a region encompassing the western United States and Canada, excluding Alaska. Such a binational analysis is timely because habitat required for meeting species habitat and connectivity needs, and for maintaining ecosystem processes, spans the boundary between the US and Canada. Planning efforts such as the LCCs are increasingly recognizing the binational scope on conservation challenges. The purpose of this study was to record nearshore current patterns as witnessed and experienced by ocean users living in the greater Hilo area of Hawai'i Island, Hawai'i. This study relied on ocean-expert knowledge gained from place-based first-hand work and lifestyle experience. The ocean-experts were categorized as fisher, paddler, sailor, surfers, or others. The interviews were collected during 2014-2015, with prototype interviews collected in 2009. During the interview the ocean-expert was asked to select the appropriate map scale for their area of expertise (1:5000, 1:20,000, 1:40,000, or 1:100,000) and to describe and draw the nearshore currents.
