Montane Conifer Connectivity of areas of high elevation and high human footprint in the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative study area. This application provides Montane Conifer Connectivity for 2000 and 2080 (A1B).The three primary geospatial layers used in this analysis were a digital elevation model (DEM), a vegetation layer, and a human footprint layer. Due to the geographic extent of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative, digital elevation models from different sources had to be used to create one seamless DEM. The digital elevation models were obtained from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), the United States Geologic Survey, and the Government of the Yukon Territory....

Overview Land and resource managers in the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC) currently lack conservation planning tools that can directly feed into the planning, design, delivery, and monitoring of ecosystems across all levels of biodiversity from genes to ecosystems. The North Pacific Forest Landscape Corridor and Connectivity Project utilized a landscape connectivity simulator (UNICOR) and a genetic simulation program (CDPOP) to model the functional (dispersal and genetic) connectivity in the North Pacific Landscape. The outputs from these programs indicated areas with high potential for landscape and genetic isolation and low probability of dispersal and colonization. In addition, this...

Chugachmiut is a tribal consortium representing the seven tribes of the Chugach Region of Alaska (Chenega Bay, Eyak, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Qutekcak, Tatitlek, and Valdez). The Native people of this region rely heavily on subsistence gathered food for sustenance and nourishment. Studies by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game show that a significant portion of the total foods consumed, 375 pounds per person per year, are from subsistence hunting and gathering. In the traditional Native diet, fruits from the Alaska blueberry (Vaccinium alaskensis Howell) plant and the salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) are a major source of sweet food and hence are culturally as well as nutritionally important (Viereck and Little...
Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Central Council) assisted the Organized Village of Kasaan (OVK) in their NPLCC grant, Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Climate Change project. A survey was developed and used to interview traditional gathers on the time of year they did subsistence gathering.

The over-arching theme of this work is that soil data affect the performance and realism of vegetation models with particular focus on their ability to predict or explain disturbances such as fire or disease. We tested the sensitivity of the Excel version of the 3-PG model to soil properties and applied this information to understanding bark beetle attacks in drought-stressed forests. We tested the sensitivity of the MC2 model to soil depth with a particular focus on how soils affect the biogeochemistry and fire modules of the Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM). We found in these sensitivity analyses, soil depth, soil water storage capacity (ASW) and soil texture are among the most important soil factors to...

This project will look at how climate change has altered hydrologic systems, Pacific salmon habitat, and survival of salmon in the Nooksack River watershed. It will develop an adaptation plan that can be adopted and integrated into management plans.Project Objectives for NPLCC funding:1. Assess climate change impacts on fish and fish biology and inform salmon habitat restoration actions aimed at perpetuating all nine salmonid species in the Nooksack River basin in the face of climate change (partially funded by proposed NPLCC funding).2. Conduct a vulnerability assessment that will ultimately reduce sensitivity, reduce exposure, and increase adaptive capacity of salmon to climate change impacts (partially funded...

Multiple agencies and organizations in southwestern Oregon have made significant progress in collaborative restoration of forest landscapes and in projecting climate change effects and adaptation responses. We will build on these efforts by moving proposed activities forward using a climate-informed framework. Specifically, we will (1) implement “shovel-ready” restoration projects using climate-smart management practices, (2) prioritize additional proposed restoration projects informed by a recent climate change assessment, and (3) mainstream climate-smart thinking in federal planning efforts. These activities will ensure that restoration in southwestern Oregon is resilient to future climatic variability and change.
Descriptions of data produced by the project entitled “Incorporating Spatial Heterogeneity in Temperature into Climate Vulnerability Assessments for Coastal Pacific Streams” by Fullerton, Lawler, Lee, and Torgersen, 2017. Data are organized into three main folders: ‘Tabular’, which contains data tables, ‘Shapefiles’, which contains geospatial data, and ‘Images’, which contains maps and plots. The file structure and content descriptions are provided below. /Tabular:For each subfolder, a metadata file (“_Metadata_xxxx.csv”) describes the data and fields. /TIR: Thermal infrared (TIR) remotely sensed data for individual river surveys. Data were extracted from TIR shapefile attribute tables (see /Shapefiles/OriginalTIR)....

This report summarizes the results of a three-year investigation of terrestrial habitat connectivity priorities for the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (South Atlantic LCC). Our primary objective was to generate results that could be used to drive fine‐scaled conservation planning to enhance habitat connectivity across the South Atlantic LCC. The project focused on seven target species, including large mammals (black bear, red wolf, Florida panther/eastern cougar) and a group of terrestrial reptiles (eastern diamondback rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake, pine snake, and box turtle). We used two different modeling approaches to identify areas with either high predicted flow of a given species (Circuitscape)...
This project will conduct a synthesis of marine spatial data. An OPS staff will be hired to work with marine/coastal experts – to develop a Technical Advisory Group and gather data and input on the processes used in the marine assessment. Additionally, this project will identify key inland (terrestrial and freshwater) areas that currently have or may have in the future direct and indirect impacts on the health of the marine environment. Results of this project will be the basis for the marine component of the Landscape Conservation Design being developed by the Peninsular Florida Landscape Conservation Cooperative. Every effort will be made to build upon existing science and other ongoing projects that may be developing...

We quantified trophic and reproductive functional diversity (SES FDis) of freshwater fish communities and related these measurements to environmental indicators to inform conservation planning actions as part of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (SALCC). We estimated functional diversity at two different spatial scales (regional and local) using datasets of different sampling intensity and time duration. Our regional-scale analysis measures functional diversity across the SALCC at the sub-basin, or HUC8-scale, using occurrence data obtained from the MARIS and NAS databases. Our local-scale analysis is based on a systematic sampling program conducted by the South Carolina Department of Natural...

In this approximately five and a half-minute video we climb up into the upper Waianae Mountains with Kapua Kawelo and hear her story of how her passion and love of nature turned into becoming a Resource Manager for the U.S. Army Garrison Hawaiʻi’s Oahu Army Natural Resource Program. She explains how she helped the last five remaining Hāhā (Cyanea superba) plants on Oahu bounce back by tipping the balance, restoring the habitat, and moving a small portion of the offspring to higher elevations outside of the historical range where these species had once lived. In this wetter and cooler habitat, the plants are fulfilling their life cycle. This is an amazing example of navigating change with innovative strategies, persistence,...

This habitat of upland hardwood-dominated forests occurs in the Interior Low Plateau region of the southeastern United States along ridgetops and slopes of various aspects. The floristic expression of different stands included in this habitat varies considerably with aspect and soil type. Included here are a variety of associations ranging along a moisture gradient from submesic to drier ones. The submesic to dry-mesic expressions tend to be found on midslopes with northerly to easterly aspects, and the drier ones on southerly to westerly aspects and on broad ridges. Parent material can range from calcareous to acidic with very shallow, well- to excessively well-drained soils in the drier expressions and moderately...
