The impact of agricultural drainage and resulting non-point source nutrient export on water quality is a growing concern across the entire Prairie Pothole Region. In Canada, the three Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan) are currently revising and reviewing surface water management strategies and have recognized the need for wetland restoration and conservation to help maintain and restore water quality, and sustain watershed health. However, unlike the US portion of the PPR, there is no complete wetland inventory for the Canadian portion of the PPR. As a result it is not currently possible to target wetland conservation and restoration efforts to maximize water quality benefits. This project...

Data Sources: Native prairie data was provided by the Minnesota Biological Survey, February 2015. The land cover analysis is based on the US Fish and Wildlife Service Habitat and Population Evaluation Team's 2014 re-anlaysis of the National Land Cover Database's 2011 data.

This layer was created by selecting classes relevant to conservation of the grassland-prairie-savanna broadly defined habitat from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (evt) spatial data product clipped to the boundary of the GCPO LCC. The layer was generated as in input layer for the Draft Grassland Condition Index raster data layer in support of the GCPO LCC rapid ecological assessment of the Grassland-Prairie-Savanna Priority Habitat. In selecting vegetation types, “grasslands” were defined as any landscape dominated by grass, excluding classes considered to be features of other priority habitats, such as marshes, dunes, glades, woodlands, and pine savanna. The 44 selected grassland classes included pasture/hay...

This data set contains output from the dynamic vegetation model MC1, as modified to simulate future woody encroachment in the northern Great Plains, for 23 monthly variables, 63 yearly variables, and 31 multi-year variables. Variables include simulated plant (by growth form) and soil carbon stocks, net primary production, vegetation type, potential and actual evapotranspiration, stream flow, and fuel mass and moisture. Model output is provided for the EQ, Spinup, Historical, and Future stages of MC1 runs; future stages were run for four climate projections crossed with 10 or 11 fire X grazing X CO2 concentration scenarios for the western and eastern portions of the study area, respectively.
The grassland condition index raster data layer assigns to each 30 meter pixel in the GCPO a condition index score generated by the presence or absence of a set of desired conditions such as patch size, vegetation height, etc. This grassland bar code layer indicates which conditions contributed to the index value score, and by how much, by use of a nine-digit code. The digits in the code represent the following input conditions in order: potential for restoration, presence of a grassland ecological system, presence of prairie (a subset of grasslands characterized by the presence or dominance of native vegetation), configuration in a patch > 100 acres, and the four site-level condition endpoints: vegetation height...

The amount, configuration, and condition of grasslands, prairies, and savannas in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPO LCC) was assessed at 30 meter spatial resolution. Each pixel was assigned a score based on a dichotomous decision tree evaluating the following: whether described as a grassland ecological system class, if not, whether potentially restorable to grassland, if grassland, whether dominated by native plants (prairie), whether in a patch >100 acres in size, and whether described as having any of four condition endpoints: vegetation height (> 1 meter), vegetation cover (> 80% herbaceous or < 20% shrub), tree density (< 10 trees per acre), and disturbance pattern...

This data set contains output from the dynamic vegetation model MC1, as modified to simulate future woody encroachment in the northern Great Plains. Simulations were done for the historical period (1895-2005) and the future period (2006-2100). Separate simulations were done for eastern and western portions of the region, with the eastern simulations using model parameters appropriate for Juniperus virginiana as the major evergreen needle-leaf life form, and the western simulations using model parameters appropriate for Pinus ponderosa as the major evergreen needle-leaf life form. Simulations in each portion were run for two A2 emissions scenario climate projections (CSIRO, representing moderate temperature increases...

Pine and Prairie Birds This layer is an outdated version of one of the South Atlantic LCC indicators in the pine woodlands, savannas and prairies ecosystem. It is an index combining species distribution and census data for three pine and prairie bird species. This indicator was updated in Blueprint 2.1 to extend the Northern bobwhite and red-cockaded woodpecker data to new areas of the pine and prairie ecosystem map. Reason for Selection This species index represents the structure and function of pine ecosystems in the Southeast. Input Data The distribution of red-cockaded woodpecker ( Picoides borealis), Northern bobwhite ( Colinus virginianus), and Bachman's sparrow ( Aimophila aestivalis) are included in the...

The dynamic global vegetation model MC1 simulates plant growth and biogeochemical cycles, vegetation type, wildfire, and their interactions. The model simulates competition between trees and grasses (including other herbaceous species), as affected by differential access to light and water, and fire-caused tree mortality (Bachelet et al., 2000; 2001). MC1 projects the dynamics of lifeforms, including evergreen and deciduous needleleaf and broadleaf trees, as well as C3 and C4 grasses. However, the model can also be parameterized for a particular dominant species of the associated lifeform. For this project we used two versions of MC1, both of which modified the standard code to improve the simulation of potential...
