Includes data used to estimate population demographic parameters for an exemplary high-elevation amphibian species, the federally endangered Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon shenandoah). These parameters were entered into a Markov projection model which we used to forecast the future population status of the Shenandoah salamander.

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set describes metropolitan areas in the conterminous United States, developed from U.S. Bureau of the Census boundaries of Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSA) and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), that have been processed to extract the largest contiguous urban area within each MSA or CMSA.

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This is a point coverage of the 1990 Census of Population and Housing for the conterminous United States. (Alaska and Hawaii are available separately). The coverage contains the location of population points retrieved at the block group summary level and shows the total number of persons and housing units enumerated in the "100 percent processing" component of the decennial census. The data was extracted from CD-ROMs containing Public...

Standard of living is determined in part by the availability of ecological resources, and in part by the availability of "cheap energy." The demise of cheap energy is likely to occur during the twenty-first century. Gradually, over this time, humans will be restricted to using renewable natural capital. Reliance on renewable energy sources will require a reduction in population to within the range of 1.5 to 3 billion people in order to maintain what most of us would regard as an adequate lifestyle. Attention is drawn to the need for nations to exercise sovereign responsibility.

SWPA_alvbsn is a vector dataset of alluvial-fill basin statistics for the Southwest United States. Statistics for each basin include physical details such as area, landcover, elevation, slope and precipitation. Anthropogenic data for basin include landuse, population, and wateruse.
This thematic map illustrates the population density in the United States in 2010. Population density is the number of people per square mile. Population density is calculated by dividing the total population count of geographic feature by the area of the feature, in square miles. The area is calculated from the geometry of the geographic feature in projected coordinates. This map shows Esri's 2010 estimates using Census 2000 geographies. The geography depicts States at greater than 25m scale, Counties at 750k to 25m scale, Census Tracts at 150k to 750km scale, and Census B This thematic map illustrates the population density in the United States in 2010. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped housing and population counts from the decennial U.S. Census Data at block group level geography to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the coterminous U.S. We also overlaid the raw housing data with the Protected Areas Dataset (PAD version 1.1) to split census block groups into privately and publicly owned sub-blocks, thereby creating a map that more accurately locates where people and houses exist in space. This data is useful within a GIS for mapping and analysis at national, state, and local levels.

This project supported a climate assessment workshop for the Northwest region. The workshop brought together regional stakeholders interested in understanding regional climate impacts and identifying strategies for adapting resources to changing conditions. The workshop also initiated a process of participatory activities and communication about the climate assessment, which helped contribute to the broader National Climate Assessment (NCA). By discussing adaptive management solutions with regional stakeholders, the workshop provided regional case study results to the NCA, such as information on local lessons and best practices. Specific workshop objectives included (1) convening and launching a process for coordinating...

Community composition data from multi-pass electrofishing surveys for assessing fish populations in headwater streams of the Adirondack Mountains, New York, USA. Each row represents one individual fish. This spreadsheet contains 11 columns. The first 7 columns describe the data (year collected, local site ID, stream name, latitude, longitude, USGS site number, and electrofishing pass number) and the remaining 4 columns describe each individual fish (common name, scientific name, total length (mm) and weight (g)). These data support the following publication: Baldigo, B.P., Sporn, L.A., George, S.D., and Ball, Jacob, 2017. Efficacy of environmental DNA to detect and quantify Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis, populations...

This documentation describes the fourth version of a database of administrative units with associated population figures for Africa. The first version was compiled for UNEP's Global Desertification Atlas (UNEP 1992, Deichmann and Eklundh 1991), while the second version represented an update and expansion of this first product (Deichmann 1994, WRI 1995), and the third was another update and expansion (Deichmann 1997). This new version for Africa provides considerably more detail: more than 109,000 administrative units (83,000 of which are in South Africa), compared to about 800 in the first, 2,200 in the second version and 4,700 in the third. In addition, for each of these units a population estimate was compiled...
This dataset represents all of the inhabited places of the Central African Republic. They were assembled from all of the villages and important places, administrative centers, municipalities, regional capitals and the country capital. This dataset was obtained from topographic maps with GPS...

With electric generation responsible for 41 percent of U.S anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy use, development of clean energy sources is essential if the United States is to reduce release of greenhouse gases and slow global warming. Many proponents of sustainable energy anticipate that electric generation from renewable sources would thrive in a deregulated market, driven by consumer demand for "green" energy and the end of incentives to build large central power plants under the cost-plus profits guaranteed by state utility commissions. This paper examines the flaws in this expectation. After reviewing the highly cyclical nature of U.S. energy policy making in recent decades, the study links...
This table contains information about the amount of each threat analysis attribute, indicator and metric quantified for the 6th level Hydrological Unit (HUC12). These attributes were calculated for the entire HUC 12, the streams within the HUC 12, or the riparian corridor within the HUC 12. The attributes were calculated using ArcMap Tools These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. The Appalachian region is rich in biodiversity that is highly threatened by energy production, development, and a host of other factors. Large-scale impacts such as climate change will play out within this context, affecting habitats and species in different ways. Understanding the vulnerability of various species and habitats within the Appalachian LCC to such changes is of critical importance. Identifying the steps needed to acquire vulnerability information and then using this information to inform adaptation and mitigation strategies is a major research priority of the LCC.The Appalachian LCC provided a grant to NatureServe to conduct critical vulnerability assessments. Researchers first convened a panel of...
