The sea-cliff bedstraw (Galium buxifolium) data set contains two types of information, formatted as CSVs: 1) Spatial coordinates (WGS 84) of known population occurrences on Santa Cruz and San Miguel Islands, California, as of 2006 (sensitive locality information); 2) Demographic data measured at four populations growing on Santa Cruz Island. Three of the populations were measured in 2005 and 2006, the fourth was measured in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2014. A green-tree reservoir (GTR) is a stand of bottomland hardwoods that is intentionally flooded in the fall and winter to support migrating waterfowl. Bottomland hardwood forest plots in the GTR on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (FNWR) are measured every 5-6 years to monitor tree survival, growth, and mortality. This dataset presents the measurements of all the trees in 54 plots during the year 2001. Parameters measured are species, diameter, vigor class, canopy class, and whether or not the tree is a new recruit in 2001. These parameters are defined in the Entity and Attributes section of this metadata file. Vegetation type and density data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center at three locations in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected in Lindsey Slough in April 2017, and Middle River and the Mokelumne River in March 2018. Vegetation samples were collected by divers, and used to determine dry biomass density. These data were collected as part of a cooperative project, with the USGS California Water Science Center and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, on the effects of invasive aquatic vegetation on sediment transport in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Coastal wetlands are major global carbon sinks, however, they are heterogeneous and dynamic ecosystems. To characterize spatial and temporal variability in a New England salt marsh, static chamber measurements of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were compared among major plant-defined zones (high marsh dominated by Distichlis spicata and a zone of invasive Phragmites australis) during 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Two sediment cores were collected in 2015 from the Phragmites zone to support previously reported core collections from the high marsh sites (Gonneea and others 2018). From 2011-2018 USGS biologists recorded vegetation and biological soil crust (BSC) cover by species and tracked survival of tagged individual plants (388 in total) across 40 locations where paired experimental plots had been installed in 2010. Plant cover was visually estimated using four 75 x 100 cm survey frames. Each site contained a two plots measuring 1.5 by 2.0 meteres: a control plot and a plot covered by a shelter that excluded 35% of incoming precipitation. These data are the results of surveys for the Shasta salamander complex (Hydromantes shastae, H. samweli, and H. wintu) conducted at 87 survey plots on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest from April 2019 to March 2020. Time- and area-constrained occupancy surveys were conducted at plots selected within high-priority areas identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. There are additional surveys planned for future field seasons. As the Shasta Salamander is under review for listing under the Endangered Species Act, sensitive location information is restricted, and can be made available upon request by contacting the dataset point of contact.
We used a stratified-random sampling approach to estimate the total abundance of Wedge-tailed Shearwater (Ardenna pacifica) nest sites across Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (KPNWR), Kauaʻi, during 1-7 July 2019. We first identified strata as unique geographic areas of the refuge to account for potential differences in nesting habitat and non-uniform nest site clustering. The U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center (USGS-WERC), with support from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), is working with many partners to generate an Atlas of Breeding Seabirds of the Main Hawaiian Islands. This atlas will provide benchmarks to measure future changes in seabird population sizes and breeding distribution throughout Hawai‘i and will also assist efforts to evaluate threats to Hawaiian seabirds both on land and at sea. This data release consists of vegetation cover, soil surface elevation (also called vertical land motion of the wetland (VLMw)), and vertical accretion data collected over 23 months beginning in May 2001 in a restored brackish marsh in southeast Louisiana, USA. Vegetation cover was estimated in permanent plots, and soil cores were collected for determination of bulk density, organic matter content and texture. VLMw was measured using rod surface elevation tables, while accretion was measured using feldspar marker horizons (i.e., RSET-MH technique).

These data consist of environmental covariates and estimated plot-level mortality of ponderosa pine trees. Environmental covariates include growing season temperature and soil moisture, and values are summarized into long-term mean conditions, and anomalies observed between forest inventory sampling events for each plot. Data also include plot locations (with uncertainty introduced by the US Forest Service to maintain private property rights), plot basal area, and several variables related to estimated mortality rate of ponderosa pine trees under various assumptions about basal area conditions.
