PipingPloverForagingArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing an area generally associated with a nesting area and which provides a source of food for Piping Plovers. Appropriate habitat includes shallow water areas along exposed beach substrates associated with lakes, ponds, and beaches, and dry, barren sandbars along backwater river areas which provide abundant macroinvertebrate and insect populations. These areas fluctuate with changing water levels on large irrigation reservoirs. This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays at 1:50,000 scale USGS county mapsheets and implementation of the SmartBoard Interactive Whiteboard...
The Commission on Environmental Cooperation, in concert with a trinational group of experts, has identified North American species of common conservation concern (SCCC). These terrestrial and marine species comprise a group of important migratory, transboundary and endemic species selected from among the continent’s great wealth of wild flora and fauna, which require regional cooperation for their effective conservation.
The goal of this project is to provide a broader ecological understanding of the ways in which the breaches and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) breach-fill projects affect piping plover populations, their red fox predators and their invertebrate prey communities. Virginia Tech (VT) compared the dynamics of bird use and invertebrate densities in an open breach area, two filled breach areas, two restoration areas, overwash areas, and other areas. Ultimately VT results will help refine their understanding of the time frame and manner in which piping plover habitat develops and persists. The work described in this report was funded under the Breach Contingency Plan (BCP; USACE 1996), the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches...
The purpose of this project was to provide biologists and managers along the Atlantic coast with tools to predict the effects of accelerating sealevel rise on the distribution of piping plover breeding habitat, to test those predictions, and to feed results back into the modeling framework to improve predictive capabilities. Our goals were to provide short-term (i.e., over project life) results related to the effects of sea level rise on piping plover breeding habitat at Assateague Island and to use these results to ultimately (i.e., longer term, during and beyond project life) inform a coastwide assessment of threats from sea-level rise and related habitat conservation recommendations that can be implemented by...

In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) wetland plant, invertebrate, and waterbird productivity are primarily driven by water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles. Large proportions of wetlands in the PPR have been drained, often consolidating water from smaller to larger-interconnected wetlands. This project will examine whether large basins that receive inflow from consolidation drainage have reduced water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles than those in undrained landscapes, resulting in relatively stable wetlands that have lower densities of invertebrate forage for ducks and shorebirds. We will also include a sample of wetland historically used by piping plovers to assess the threat of consolidation...

Many waterbird species utilize a diversity of aquatic habitats; however, with increasing anthropogenic needs tomanage water regimes there is global concern over impacts to waterbird populations. The federally threatened pipingplover (Charadrius melodus; hereafter plovers) is a shorebird that breeds in three habitat types in the Prairie PotholeRegion of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada: riverine sandbars; reservoir shorelines; and prairie wetlands. Watersurface areas of these habitats fluctuate in response to wet–dry periods; decreasing water surface areas exposeshorelines that plovers utilize for nesting. Climate varies across the region so when other habitats are unavailable forplover nesting because of flooding,...

This dataset represents the location of tidal inlets and beaches opened and closed by Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012, from the Storm-induced Habitat Modifications caused by Hurricane Sandy within the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) project. Tidal inlets were located along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine to North Carolina using aerial imagery from Google Earth, NOAA-NGS, USGS and PSDS that was taken from October 31 to November 9, 2012. Comparison to the locations of tidal inlets that were open prior to Hurricane Sandy as described in three previous reports allowed for the identification of inlets or breaches that were opened or closed by Hurricane Sandy....

This dataset represents tidal inlets before Hurricane Sandy from the "Beach and Tidal Inlet Habitat Inventories" project. Tidal inlets were located along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine to Virginia using Google Earth imagery to identify inlets that were open prior to Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The locations of historical inlets known to have been open in the past but closed at the time of Hurricane Sandy were identified through historical maps, literature and other sources. See the reports by T.M. Rice entitled "Inventory of Habitat Modifications to Tidal Inlets in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) prior to Hurricane Sandy: South Shore of Long Island...

Atlantic coast piping plover (Charadrius melodus) nest sites are typically found on low-lying beach and dune systems, which respond rapidly to coastal processes like sediment overwash, inlet formation, and island migration that are sensitive to climate-related changes in storminess and the rate of sea-level rise. Data were obtained to understand piping plover habitat distribution and use along their Atlantic Coast breeding range. A smartphone application called iPlover was developed to collect standardized data on habitat characteristics at piping plover nest locations. The application capitalized on a network of trained monitors that observe piping plovers throughout their U.S. Atlantic coast breeding range as...

The data represent sandy beaches, from Maine to Virginia, before Hurricane Sandy which made landfall on October 29, 2012 from the “Beach and Tidal Inlet Habitat Inventories” project. The North Atlantic coast, Maine to Long Island Sound and the Mid-Atlantic coast, Montauk, NY to Virginia datasets used different methodology and are discribed below.North Atlantic:The shoreline was divided into segments (called ‘pockets’) based on whether the area directly adjacent to the beach was developed or undeveloped. Developed beach segments were coded with orange polylines. Undeveloped beach segments were coded with light green polylines. Each shoreline segment was labelled with the name of the municipality followed by a number...

Changes in tidal marsh area and habitat type in response to sea-level rise were modeled using the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM 6) that accounts for the dominant processes involved in wetland conversion and shoreline modifications during long-term sea level rise (Park et al. 1989; Successive versions of the model have been used to estimate the impacts of sea level rise on the coasts of the U.S. The model was produced by Warren Pinnacle Consulting, Inc. for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The SLAMM version 6 technical document can be accessed at http://warrenpinacle.com/prof/SLAMM. SLAMM outputs were converted from raster to vector features. Land cover (wetland) types were generalized to MesoHabitat...

The barrier islands and coastal beaches along the Atlantic Coast are dynamic systems continuously affected and shaped by tides and weather events (Davidson-Arnott 2010). Occasionally weather events are large enough to generate or expand beach overwash areas and may inundate all or part of the islands. Nor'easters, are known to play a significant role in shaping beach morphology along the Mid-Atlantic and New England coasts (Leatherman et al. 1977, Hapke et al. 2010), but hurricanes are also recognized drivers of change in this region (Donnelly et al. 2001, Donnelly et al. 2004, Buynevich and Donnelly 2006, Boldt et al. 2010). The federally threatened Atlantic Coast piping plover (Charadrius melodus melodus) is dependent...
