This dataset represents public and non-governmental organizations (NGO) beaches in the North and Mid-Atlantic. The data are part of a larger project, Inventory of Habitat Modifications to Sandy Oceanfront Beaches in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) as of 2015: Maine to North Carolina. Beachfront land parcels in public or NGO ownership were delineated from a variety of sources, including county or municipal parcel data available online to the public (see Table 1 of Rice 2015b for a full list of sources consulted for Maine to New York). PipingPloverForagingArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing an area generally associated with a nesting area and which provides a source of food for Piping Plovers. Appropriate habitat includes shallow water areas along exposed beach substrates associated with lakes, ponds, and beaches, and dry, barren sandbars along backwater river areas which provide abundant macroinvertebrate and insect populations. The goal of this project is to provide a broader ecological understanding of the ways in which the breaches and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) breach-fill projects affect piping plover populations, their red fox predators and their invertebrate prey communities. Virginia Tech (VT) compared the dynamics of bird use and invertebrate densities in an open breach area, two filled breach areas, two restoration areas, overwash areas, and other areas. The purpose of this project was to provide biologists and managers along the Atlantic coast with tools to predict the effects of accelerating sealevel rise on the distribution of piping plover breeding habitat, to test those predictions, and to feed results back into the modeling framework to improve predictive capabilities. In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) wetland plant, invertebrate, and waterbird productivity are primarily driven by water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles. Large proportions of wetlands in the PPR have been drained, often consolidating water from smaller to larger-interconnected wetlands. This project will examine whether large basins that receive inflow from consolidation drainage have reduced water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles than those in undrained landscapes, resulting in relatively stable wetlands that have lower densities of invertebrate forage for ducks and shorebirds. This dataset represents the location of tidal inlets and beaches opened and closed by Hurricane Sandy on October 29, 2012, from the Storm-induced Habitat Modifications caused by Hurricane Sandy within the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) project. Tidal inlets were located along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine to North Carolina using aerial imagery from Google Earth, NOAA-NGS, USGS and PSDS that was taken from October 31 to November 9, 2012. This dataset represents tidal inlets before Hurricane Sandy from the "Beach and Tidal Inlet Habitat Inventories" project. Tidal inlets were located along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine to Virginia using Google Earth imagery to identify inlets that were open prior to Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The locations of historical inlets known to have been open in the past but closed at the time of Hurricane Sandy were identified through historical maps, literature and other sources.
