The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the QC WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_QCObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer initials.

Starting in 2003, a digital survey notes file was created each year upon completion of the WBPHS_AK survey to document certain logistics information. The file format evolved over time; files from 2003 through 2009 are text files, whereas files from 2010 to present are Microsoft Excel files. This archived collection comprises the set of digital survey notes created from 2003 to present.

Increased network capacity is a priority identified by the GNLCC and the RMPF Leadership Team to build on the organizational structure of LCC Partner Forums. Partner Forum organizations are intentionally inclusive collections of key decision-makers and stake-holders in the region who facilitate the flow of information and ideas, the delineation of shared priorities, and the advancement of projects leading to mutually beneficial outcomes. The ability of a Partner Forum to provide these services is directly related to the efficacy of its network. As the Partner Forum network improves, it successfully applies the outcomes of its work across the Rocky Mountain region and the greater GNLCC area. The importance of building...

Climate change is the most pressing societal challenge of our time, with projected changes likely to result in cascading impacts to species, ecosystems, and ecosystem services. These impacts will exacerbate current resource challenges for the Hawaiian Islands, such as conflict over water resources, land use and degradation, and invasive species. Resource managers and conservation planners are addressing this challenge by revising current plans and practices with increased attention on potential climate impacts to natural resources, communities, and socioeconomic values to better meet long-term goals. We propose to support resource managers and planners of the main Hawaiian Islands in meeting this challenge by developing...

A mission of the Science Applications program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is to provide a partnership where the conservation community can guide more effective conservation actions in the face of resource threats amplified by a rapidly changing climate. To accomplish this mission, critical needs exist to 1) develop scientific information and tools for conservation prioritization and decision making and 2) facilitate delivery and adoption of these science products by partners operating at multiple spatial scales with varying approaches to conservation. Extending the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) Designing Sustainable Landscape (DSL) project (McGarigal et al. 2017) sponsored by Science Applications...

This project entails creation and refinement of the conservation targets for the terrestrial Priority Resources for the Peninsular Florida Landscape Conservation Cooperative. Potential Conservation Targets were developed through stakeholder Workshops held throughout the State of Florida in 2016/2017. Lists of potential CTs were generated through brainstorming and general discussion and stakeholders ranked the final list for suitability for using as a measure of Priority Resource health. The resulting list of potential CTs for the Coastal Uplands Priority Resource were explored and the results were presented to the Coastal Uplands team. The potential CTs were ranked according to the availability of data and suitability...

The Mississippi River Basin / Gulf Hypoxia Initiative (MRB/GHI), spearheaded by seven LCCs, is undertaking a strategic and transparent process to create an integrated framework that supports planning, design, configuration, and delivery of wildlife conservation practices within the watershed. This framework consists of multiple quantitative objectives representing three interests (i.e., wildlife, water quality, agriculture), a tiered set of conservation strategies to achieve those objectives within five production agriculture systems (i.e., corn & soybean; grazing lands; floodplain forest; rice; cotton), and a modeling approach to determine where to best implement those actions within four key ecological systems...

The proposed large-scale collaborative research project will provide the first thorough assessment of the effects of pion-juniper woodland treatments on the Pinyon Jay, a species undergoing rapid population declines according to the BBS. The results of this multi-state study will provide land management agencies critical information about impacts of woodland management on the species and significant, novel data about habitat use and specific habitat preferences. These data will allow land managers to better understand the needs of the species and inform how future management practices can be implemented to reduce or mitigate negative impacts. Without these data, land management agencies and the conservation community...

Robust assessments of nesting periods and durations for many grassland-nesting birds in the Great Plains are lacking. The timing of management practices (e.g., grazing, haying, mowing, burning) will invariably have different benefits or impacts to different guilds of birds. Our goal is to inform decisions about timing of management practices with research to provide an improved quantification and understanding of contemporary nesting season patterns for grassland birds. Results from this project could aid program managers through improved assessments of tradeoffs from the timing of management actions for various priority birds in the Great Plains.

Project the future probability of occupancy of WBB in the continental U.S. based on changing temperature and precipitation for 2055 and 2085, across scenarios representing levels of the other most important stressors to Western bumblebees (e.g., status quo pesticide use, reduced pesticide use; status quo habitat, reduced habitat based on future development projections). Based on occupancy predictions and a bootstrap approach, enumerate the number and location of populations (defined based on grid cells as in prior bumble bee SSAs) across the distribution in the continental U.S. under the above scenarios. Identify areas where management of stressors are most likely to lead to conservation of populations versus local...
The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) is in the process of collecting information related to conservation efforts implemented in the sagebrush biome. This data will predominantly covers the time from 2009-2018. It is our hope to utilize this information and partner with USGS to investigate if/how these efforts are related to greater sage-grouse population trends being developed as part of a larger Population Monitoring Framework that FWS is involved with. Results of this evaluation would help inform which populations/areas may be receiving a larger conservation benefit from action implemented as well as if changes in trends are related to conservation efforts or other environmental factors. This effort is in support...

The objective of this project is to identify areas where herbivore management interventions would be the most effective in promoting coral reef recovery and resiliency following the recent coral bleaching. When a bleaching event occurs, as Hawaii experienced in 2014 and 2015, the results can be regime shifts or reef decline. Decline can be permanent or temporary, depending on its resilience. There is an urgent need to develop a process to increase the resiliency of Hawaii’s coral reefs through certain characteristics, including herbivory. Herbivory maintains open spaces, promotes remnant corals to recover, and allows new coral to settle in disturbed areas. We will operationalize this concept by 1) integrating Marxan...
