Five alcoves (rock shelters) in the Forty-Mile Canyon—Willow Gulch area of the Escalante River Basin in southeastern Utah yielded rich deposits of late Quaternary macrobotanical remains. The deposits were sampled and the contents identified in order to construct a chronology of vegetational change. Fourteen radiocarbon dates indicate that the fossils were deposited between 12,690 and 7510 yr B.P. (years before present). Ninety-one plant taxa were identified, 62 to species. Evaluation of climate is fundamental to determining the potential success of an introduced or invasive insect pest. Gall abundance and biomass was recorded on marked valley oak and blue oak individuals throughout California. Galls, mostly caused by cynipid gall wasps, were identified to species. Sampling effort per tree was recorded as the number of leaves searched for gall wasps. Leaves were taken from two branches per tree using pole pruners, and total galls per tree were summed in each observation. Annual observations of galls on each tree were made from 2000-2006.

Due to a gap in information on regeneration of hard-mast trees in the floodplain, interpretation was completed of existing 8“/pixel aerial imagery delineating a detailed hardwood forest spatial dataset within the floodplain forest of the Fish and Wildlife Upper Mississippi National Wildlife & Fish Refuge, McGregor District. The detailed map of bottomland hardwoods will allow for the identification of existing habitat and assess bottomland hardwood tree patterns to enable management of these areas.
The recovery plan for the Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida) recommended protection of owl nesting and roosting habitat. Descriptions of rnicrohabitat (less than or equal to-0.04 ha) characteristics associated with suitable nesting sites have been limited for the area of pine-oak forest occupied by this species in Arizona, USA. Therefore, we studied Mexican spotted owl habitat on a 585-km(2) study area on the Coconino Plateau near Flagstaff, Arizona. The dataset comprises analyses of core and surface samples collected in and around the Red Mountain porphyry Cu-Mo deposit, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. The dataset includes: analyses for 13 minerals in 245 core samples (Appendix 1); analyses for 44 elements in 818 core samples (Appendix 2); analyses for 54 elements in 122 rock samples (Appendix 3); analyses for 55 elements in 119 soil samples (Appendix 4); and analyses for percent ash and 66 elements in 57 mesquite ash (Appendix 5), 68 oak ash (Appendix 6), and 68 juniper ash (Appendix 7) samples, respectively.
