Ecosystems are changing worldwide and critical decisions that affect ecosystem health and sustainability are being made every day. As ecologists, we have a responsibility to ensure that these decisions are made with access to the best available science. However, to bring this idea into practice, ecology needs to make a substantial leap forward towards becoming a more predictive science. Furthermore, even for basic, conceptual questions there is a lot to be gained by addressing problems from a forecasting perspective, with more frequent data-model comparisons helping to highlight misunderstandings and reframe long-standing questions. Ecological forecasting is occurring across a wide range of ecological sub-disciplines,...

Twenty-five ore and gangue mineral separates from the Miocene-age Goldfield and Tonopah epithermal Au-Ag deposits in southwestern Nevada were analyzed to determine the helium, neon, and argon (He, Ne, and Ar) isotopic compositions contained in fluid inclusions. Four mineral separates from the Butte Main Stage vein deposit and two from the Bingham pyrite-enargite vein deposits were also analyzed. Fifteen separates are from hand samples collected from underground mine workings and the remaining 16 are from mine tailings piles and pits excavated within the past 100 years. The separates consist dominantly of pyrite, enargite, and quartz, with lesser amounts of sphalerite, galena, potassium feldspar, bismuthinite, marcasite,...

This data release documents 155 sets of dissolved noble gas analyses (neon, argon, krypton, xenon) and 153 modeled recharge temperatures for groundwater sampled from domestic water supply wells and springs throughout the northern Sierra Nevada foothills as part of the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program in 2015-2017. Data from two of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Priority Basin Project Shallow Aquifer Assessment study units are presented here: The Yuba and Bear Watersheds (YB) Shallow Aquifer Study Unit (sampled in 2015-2016) and the Mokelumne, Cosumnes, and American River Watersheds (MCAW) Shallow Aquifer Study Unit (sampled in 2016-2017)....
The Southern Rockies-Colorado Plateau Domain offers research opportunities focused on land use. The domain itself includes large sections of the states that comprise the Four Corners: New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The NEON candidate core site will be located in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in the northeastern corner of the domain at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Center at Niwot Ridge, Colorado. Niwot Ridge has served as both a Long-Term Ecological Research site and an Ameriflux (atmospheric) research site. Research aspects unique to the area include: the impacts of urban pollution (from the Denver metropolitan corridor) on the endangered alpine ecosystem, a high-elevation to Great...
