This dataset was clipped to the WLCI study area by USGS staff. This metadata references the polygonal ARC/INFO GIS cover showing the current and historic distribution of potential habitat, or range, of the Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Western North America. These data were initially researched and compiled by Dr. Michael A. Schroeder, research biologist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The initial draft of current and historic range data was mapped and submitted to state, federal, or provincial natural resource agencies and other experts for review, comment, and editing. The final product represents the best available...

This map shows current surface water bodies in MBR, including natural and man-made bodies. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. The User assumes the entire risk associated with its use of these data and bears all responsibility in determining whether these data are fit for the User's intended use. These data may not have the accuracy, resolution, completeness, timeliness, or other characteristics appropriate for applications that potential users of the data may contemplate. The User is encouraged to carefully consider the content of the metadata file associated with these data. The BLM should be cited as the data source in any products derived from...
This data set represents the results of calculations of hazard curves for a grid of points with a spacing of 0.05 degrees in latitude and longitude. This particular data set is for peak ground acceleration with a 1 percent probability of exceedance in 1 year. The data are for the Central and Eastern United States and are based on the one-year model.

This scholarly work explores the causes precipitating the collapse of the nuclear industry during the late 1970s and early 1980s, viewing the nuclear energy sector as a paradigmatic example of the fundamental incompatibility between democracy and capitalism. Though he never explicitly blames either capitalism or democracy, author John L. Campbell explains how the fact that the two are governed by contradictory decision-making logics ultimately doomed the nuclear industry during the time period he examines. Campbell considers policy constraints and faliures in industry and government, such as a lack of standardization in reactor construction and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s (AEC) inability to craft a reactor...

This paper analyses an ongoing environmental conflict over the prospect of gold mining at Mount Ida, Turkey, and aims to unpack the valuation languages social actors in the conflict use to either support or oppose gold mining. Based on a field study consisting of 37 in-depth interviews, three focus groups, and a survey administered to a total of 738 citizens, the factors that affect local public's positions vis-à-vis gold mining at Mount Ida and their choice of valuation languages are examined. Assessing the conflict at Mount Ida in terms of valuation languages enables us to better comprehend the various dimensions of the conflict and differentiate between the disagreements that can be controlled and solved via...
The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) makes long-term seismic hazard forecasts that are used in building codes. The hazard models usually consider only natural seismicity; non-tectonic (man-made) earthquakes are excluded because they are transitory or too small. In the past decade, however, thousands of earthquakes related to underground fluid injection have occurred in the central and eastern U.S. (CEUS), and some have caused damage. In response, the USGS is now also making short-term forecasts that account for the hazard from these induced earthquakes. A uniform earthquake catalog is assembled by combining and winnowing pre-existing source catalogs. Seismicity statistics are analyzed to develop recurrence models,...

This individual species distribution is derived from a GIS modeling process using species habitat association rules in combination with species geographic range. There are a total of 445 individual terrestrial vertebrate species distributions generated for Wyoming by the Wyoming Gap Analysis project.

A one-year seismic hazard forecast for the Central and Eastern United States, based on induced and natural earthquakes, has been produced by the U.S. Geological Survey. The model assumes that earthquake rates calculated from several different time windows will remain relatively stationary and can be used to forecast earthquake hazard and damage intensity for the year 2016. This assessment is the first step in developing an operational earthquake forecast for the CEUS, and the analysis could be revised with updated seismicity and model parameters. Consensus input models consider alternative earthquake catalog durations, smoothing parameters, maximum magnitudes, and ground motion estimates, and represent uncertainties...

Ecoregions are based on perceived patterns of a combination of causal and integrative factors including land use, land surface form, potential natural vegetation, and soils (Omernik, 1987). This map and descriptions of 20 ecological regions were derived by synthesizing information on the geographic distribution of environmental factors such as climate, terrain (including information on physiography, geology, glaciation, permafrost, and hydrologic features), soils, and vegetation. A qualitative assessment was used to interpret the distributional patterns and relative importance of these factors for influencing the character of the landscape from place to place.
Web site provides links to extensive information, including: conservation planning, agronomy, air resources, climate data, cultural resources, economics and sociology, energy, environmental compliance, soils, snow survey, water resources, and more. This dataset was clipped to the WLCI study area by USGS staff. The geologic map was digitized from original scribe sheets used to prepare the published Geologic Map of Wyoming (Love and Christiansen, 1985), consequently at a 1:500,000 scale. Stable base contact prints of the scribe sheets were scannned on a Tektronix 4991 digital scanner. The scanner automatically converts the scanned image to an ASCII vector format. These vectors were transferred to a VAX minicomputer, where they were loaded into Arc/Info. The dataset includes both linear and polygon features, with attributes derived from the original 1985 map.

This dataset was compiled for 2007 from multiple shapefiles supplied by Sublette County Weed and Pest. Weeds data was requested by the BLM Pinedale Field Office (PFO) to satisfy a national data call from the BLM State Office. These data have been incorporated into the PFO GIS database and supersede previously existing data. Due to the changing nature of weed infestations, this shapefile needs to be updated annually or as needed to keep it current.

In this article, the Lovins'[2] explain what is meant by Natural Capitalism, four principles that enable business to behave responsibly towards both nature and people while increasing profits, inspiring their workforce and gaining competitive advantage. It combines radically increased resource productivity; closed-loop, zero-waste, nontoxic production; a business model that rewards both; and reinvestment in natural capital. The article describes how, even today, when nature and people are typically valued at zero, protecting and restoring nature, culture and community can be far more profitable than liquidating them.
