FY2017Increasing effectiveness of post-fire treatments is a management priority, such as is emphasized in Secretarial Order #3336 on rangeland fire and restoration, which prescribes a programmatic, longer-term approach that accommodates the layering of different treatments in sagebrush-steppe rangelands. The phasing of treatments by applying them in different post-fire years is an important part of wildfire response that, along with timing of livestock grazing resumption, likely affects overall project success - but is yet under studied. This projects objective is to determine the incremental gains in increasing desirable perennials and decreasing exotic annual grasses with the phasing of land management actions...

We analyzed the chemical composition of wood produced by Māmane, a tropical tree growing in Hawai’i, in order to reconstruct changes in climate over the Hawaiian Islands. Specifically, we measured changes in the relative abundance of carbon and oxygen isotopes taken up by the trees during photosynthesis at high elevation sites on Mauna Kea. We found that these isotopes reflect the climatic conditions (precipitation and temperature) under which the trees lived, allowing us to reconstruct relative changes in climate extending back ~130 years. Our results indicate decadal-scale changes in precipitation that correlate well with large-scale atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns that dominate much of the Pacific....

FY2016Review the existing literature, summarizing what is known about the scale and prevalence of local adaptation in the Great Basin and review current practices for determining seed transfer zones, describing benefits and limitations of different approaches. Through these two reviews, we will identify gaps in knowledge and opportunities for addressing these gaps, and determine best-practices for the construction of high quality seed transfer guidelines in a rapid and efficient manner. We propose to bring together a wide group of partners to achieve these goals, with two working group meetings proposed for this project. Deliverables include two peer-reviewed publications (existing knowledge, recommendation of best...
