FY2017Increasing effectiveness of post-fire treatments is a management priority, such as is emphasized in Secretarial Order #3336 on rangeland fire and restoration, which prescribes a programmatic, longer-term approach that accommodates the layering of different treatments in sagebrush-steppe rangelands. The phasing of treatments by applying them in different post-fire years is an important part of wildfire response that, along with timing of livestock grazing resumption, likely affects overall project success - but is yet under studied. This projects objective is to determine the incremental gains in increasing desirable perennials and decreasing exotic annual grasses with the phasing of land management actions...
Imazapic has shown potential to control invasive weeds, such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), during ecological restoration, but effects on non-target native plants are poorly known. In a replicated field experiment, as part of restoration for Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Colorado, imazapic was applied in the fall at a high rate (175 g/ha) to control cheatgrass in mowed Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young). Cheatgrass was reduced, but only by 67%, and non-native forbs were reduced by 80% by the following summer. However, native forbs also declined (by 84%). Two native grasses declined, but others were not affected. Damage to native forbs would likely...

This layer depicts projected abundance of native and non-native plant species in the main Hawaiian Islands with high levels of uncertainty removed in post-processing. To estimate native and invasive species abundance in baseline climate conditions, a map was generated that considered abundance as percent cover and used high coefficient of variation values as a mask. The primary sources for post-processing the uncertainty masks are the Hawaiian Islands plant species abundance modeled means and standard deviation values (Wong et al., in preparation). These maps cover the entire landscape (including urban and agricultural areas), and therefore they can be applied in a variety of ways. Maps can be utilized to evaluate...

We downloaded, cleaned, and combined records from Biodiversity Heritage Library’s (BHL) Seed and Nursery Catalog Collection with data from Restoring American Gardens: An encyclopedia of heirloom ornamental plants, 1640-1940 (RAG; Adams 2004) to create a single database of historical nursery sales in the U.S. Each record represents an individual taxon offered for sale at an individual time in a specific nursery’s catalog. We standardized records to the current World Flora Online (http://worldfloraonline.org) accepted taxonomy, and appended accepted USDA code, growth habit, and introduction status. We also appended whether taxa were reported as invasive in the Global Plant Invaders (GPI) dataset or the Global Invasive...

We analyzed the chemical composition of wood produced by Māmane, a tropical tree growing in Hawai’i, in order to reconstruct changes in climate over the Hawaiian Islands. Specifically, we measured changes in the relative abundance of carbon and oxygen isotopes taken up by the trees during photosynthesis at high elevation sites on Mauna Kea. We found that these isotopes reflect the climatic conditions (precipitation and temperature) under which the trees lived, allowing us to reconstruct relative changes in climate extending back ~130 years. Our results indicate decadal-scale changes in precipitation that correlate well with large-scale atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns that dominate much of the Pacific....

Several cut disks and tree cores of Mamane trees growing on Hawaii Island that were subsampled and analyzed for carbon isotope determination. Isotope determination is at the 100µm resolution; tree samples are within an area of ~100 km2.
FY2016Review the existing literature, summarizing what is known about the scale and prevalence of local adaptation in the Great Basin and review current practices for determining seed transfer zones, describing benefits and limitations of different approaches. Through these two reviews, we will identify gaps in knowledge and opportunities for addressing these gaps, and determine best-practices for the construction of high quality seed transfer guidelines in a rapid and efficient manner. We propose to bring together a wide group of partners to achieve these goals, with two working group meetings proposed for this project. Deliverables include two peer-reviewed publications (existing knowledge, recommendation of best...

Conclusions: Four plant species have been tested in the majority of field evaluations, while plants native to the test area and perennial plants are particularly underrepresented. Native plants useful in restoration of rare ecosystems can increase natural enemy abundance and provide ecosystem services as much as widely recommended non-natives. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: The intentional provision of flowering plants and plant communities in managed landscapes to enhance natural enemies is termed habitat management and is a relatively new but growing aspect of conservation biology. The focus of most habitat management research has been on understanding the role of these plant-provided resources on natural enemy...

Taken from the DMP: "Georeferencing of plots and determination of site conditions using GIS. Accuracy of plot abundance values assessed with vegetation maps, satellite imagery, and expert consultation. Ten native and five invasive species of trees, shrubs and ferns were selected based on their potential ecological importance in communities, as well as how much field data was available to analyze for this study. For baseline climate condition variables, we used surface temperature and rainfall estimates (30 year baseline period, 1978–2007) developed by Giambelluca et al. (2013) with grid cell resolution of 250m. To estimate climate change responses, we used future projected climate variables developed by the International...
