Data are included for two types of field surveys conducted for freshwater mussels throughout the Susquehanna River Basin (and one site in the Potomac River Basin) in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States from 2008-2010. Timed search (qualitative) surveys were conducted in consecutive ~200 meter sections of river (at least 8 in each stream). The number of mussels of each species and associated search time were recorded for each survey section to determine a catch per unit effort (CPUE; number of individuals found per person hour). Within qualitatively surveyed areas, one ~200 meter section of stream was selected in which to conduct quantitative surveys to estimate mussel abundance, assess presence of juvenile...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains predicted geologic substrate information that was interpreted from combined sonar datasets. The shapefile contains a general description of interpreted surficial bottom type with its associated class code in the attribute table. Benthic substrate maps provide important physical characteristics that can be used in habitat modeling to guide management planning of restoration and conservation efforts.

NEAMAP stands for NorthEast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program. NEAMAP was developed to meet the needs of fisheries management and stock assessment activities in the northeastern United States. NEAMAP began in 2006 with a fall pilot survey and in 2008 began conducting both a spring and fall survey. NEAMAP samples from Cape Cod, MA south to Cape Hatteras, NC and targets both juvenile and adult fishes. NEAMAP is an integrated, cooperative state/federal data collection program. Its mission is to facilitate the collection and dissemination of fishery-independent information obtained in the Northeast for use by state and federal fisheries management agencies, the fishing industry (commercial and recreational),...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected hydroacoustic data of the St. Croix River adjacent to the Osceola (WI) boat ramp for hydrographic and benthic mapping prior to the reconstruction project implemented by the National Park Service (NPS). This dataset contains reference locations that were obtained while collecting ground-truth information for geologic substrate. For statistical analysis, the locations were selected using random point sampling. The shapefile contains sample location coordinates, a general description of interpreted surficial sediment type, and an indication of mussel presence/absence in the attribute table. These geospatial locations directly correspond to the "still-images" dataset.

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results. The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers. Assessors were asked to evaluate species based on the habitats they use in a particular subregion. Because vulnerability can vary with life-stage for many species, assessors were asked to consider the most vulnerable...

This refined map was created to help assess possible spread of nonindigenous aquatic species distributions due to flooding associated with Hurricane Harvey. Storm surge and flood events can assist expansion and dissemination of nonindigenous aquatic species through the connection of adjacent watersheds, backflow of water upstream of impoundments, increased downstream flow, and creation of freshwater bridges along coastal regions. This map will help natural resource managers determine potential new locations for individual species, or to develop a watch list of possible new species within a watershed. These data include a subset of data from the Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Database, that fall within the general...

Spatial patterns in mussel richness and endemism (i.e., weighted and corrected weighted endemism) at stream reach, HUC4, HUC6, and HUC8 spatial scales were characterized. Stream SR was estimated by summing the total number of mussel species predicted within each stream. Stream-level weighted endemism was calculated by weighting each species’ presence in the stream by the inverse of the total number of streams it was predicted to occupy, then summing across all species predicted present within the stream. This biodiversity metric therefore provides context about the range extent of the species predicted within the stream (e.g., higher values indicate either high richness or the presence of several range-restricted...

We conducted multiple toxicity tests to (1) evaluate the survival and growth of juvenile mussels (Fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) in a standard 4-week and a longer-term 12-week exposures following a method refined from the standard method using two common reference toxicants (potassium chloride [KCl] and nickel [Ni]); (2) evaluate reproductive endpoints from reproductive KCl and Ni toxicity tests. Reproductive toxicity tests started with Fatmucket brooding mature glochidia to five concentrations of K and Ni for 6 weeks. Subsamples of glochidia were then removed from the adults to determine (1) the viability of brooded glochidia; (2) the viability of free glochidia in a 24-h additional exposure; and (3) success...
