The northern part of the map area and large adjacent regions havebeen severely shaken by one or more moderate to large prehistoricearthquakes. The evidence of these takes the form ofpaleoliquefaction features, including shaking-induced sandblows anddikes that fed them.Over several summer field seasons from 1990 through 1994,several workers searched ditches and river banks for evidenceof liquefaction. They found numerous dikes and sandblows. This database includes the locations and descriptions of dikes theyobserved and measured. The most widespread paleoliquefaction is attributed to amid-Holocene earthquake near what is now Vicennes, IN, with anestimated moment- magnitude of about 7.5. In response to the Nisqually earthquake of 2001, DGER was awarded a grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Washington Emergency Management Division to develop two types of earthquake hazard maps for every county in the state—liquefaction susceptibility maps, which outline areas where water-saturated sandy soil loses strength during earthquake shaking, and NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) site class maps, which outline areas where soils amplify ground shaking. The maps will be used by state and local governments to update existing hazard mitigation plans and to delineate geologically hazardous areas under the Growth Management Act. In response to the Nisqually earthquake of...

A physiographically prominent, approximately 40 square km plateau lies roughly 20 km east of Mount Spurr volcano, northwestern Cook Inlet region, Alaska, and comprises the preserved remnant of a volcaniclastic succession, designated in this study as map unit Qvc. Although this readily mappable package of volcaniclastic rocks has been recognized in numerous studies during the past five decades, uncertainties regarding its age and origin have persisted. We describe the general characteristics of the volcaniclastic plateau, provide new age constraints for deposits, present lithofacies descriptions and interpretations of the volcaniclastic strata, and synthesize our observations and lithofacies analysis to propose an...

These data are a summary of modeled exposure of various lifeline infrastructure linear features and facilities (transportation, water supply and wastewater, oil and gas, electric power, and telecommunications) to potential hazards resulting from the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurring on the Hayward Fault on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. Existing hazard data (surface offset, ground shaking (mainshock and aftershocks), landslide, liquefaction, and fire following earthquake) were looked at alone and in combination with each other relative to the lifeline infrastructure linear features and facilities to provide estimates of potential exposure to various...

This publication addresses deep-seated landslide susceptibility, debris flow susceptibility, and other geologic hazards in ruralparts of western San Mateo County. The report also estimatespossible costs of investigating and mitigating the landslidehazards. The study area includes the Half Moon Bay 7.5'quadrangle, the Montara Mountain 7.5' quadrangle, and thePescadero/Butano Creeks watershed. Hazard maps were derived byintegrating slope data and previous geologic, landslide and debrisflow mapping. The digital database, which is found athttp://geopubs.wr.usgs.gov/open-file/of00-127includes 43 plotfiles for slope maps, Digital Orthophoto Quadranglemaps, Digital Raster Graphic topographic base maps, geologic maps,deep-seated...

The engineering-geologic map is derived electronically, using Geographic Information System (GIS) software, from the surficial-geologic map of the second segment of the proposed natural gas pipeline corridor through the upper Tanana valley, a 12-mi-wide (19.3-km-wide) area that straddles the Alaska Highway through the upper Tanana River valley from the Robertson River eastward to near Tetlin Junction in the Tanacross Quadrangle (Reger and Hubbard, PIR 2009-6A). Surficial-geologic units were initially identified by interpretation of false-color ~1:65,000-scale infrared aerial photographs taken in July 1978, August 1980, and August 1981 and locally verified by field checking in 2007 and 2008. The map shows the distribution...

The data in this data release are comprised of one geospatial vector dataset and three tabular datasets related to the HayWired earthquake scenario, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hypothesized to occur on April 18, 2018, with an epicenter in the city of Oakland, CA. The geospatial vector data are a representation of identified economic subareas for use in selected analyses related to selected counties in and around the San Francisco Bay region in California. Census tracts in seven economic subareas were identified, as was whether a tract potentially has a high concentration of building stock extensively or completely damaged by (1) earthquake hazards (ground shaking, landslide, liquefaction) and (2) all hazards (ground...

Over several summer field seasons from 1990 through 1994,several workers searched ditches and river banks for evidenceof prehistoric earthquake liquefaction. They found numerous banks with shaking-induced sandblows and thedikes that fed them. "liq94surv" shows where they searched. This database shows where additional areas were searchedin the summer of 1995.

This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle (250 square miles; equivalent to four 7.5 minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the north of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 Quadrangles. This report includes a derivative map of potential geologic hazards based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses.

This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 quadrangles (500 square miles; equivalent to eight 7.5-minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the south of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle. This report includes detailed geologic construction materials and geologic hazards data. The Tanana A-1 and A-2 Quadrangles and surrounding area comprise several isolated mountainous ridges in the western Yukon-Tanana Upland of interior Alaska.

This dataset consists of over 800 field observations of ground failure (landslides, lateral spreading, and liquefaction) and other damage triggered by the 2019-2020 Puerto Rico earthquake sequence. The sequence started with a M4.7 earthquake on 28 December 2019, followed by many more earthquakes, including 15 larger than M5 (as of 7 July 2020). The M6.4 mainshock, which is thought to have triggered much of the observed ground failure, occurred on 7 January 2020. Most field reconnaissance efforts documented here took place as soon as possible after the mainshock, from 12-18 January 2020, to attempt to capture ephemeral data before evidence was destroyed by natural forces or repairs, but observations continued to...
