The Apparent Wilcox Group thickness maps are contoured from location and top information derived from the Petroleum Information (PI) Wells database. The Wilcox apparent thickness map was constructed by searching for Wilcox and Midway Group tops. Apparent thickness is computed by subtracting Midway top from the Wilcox top. Geographic control is superimposed on the maps from USGS state line, county, elevation and other data files. The veracity of the PI Wells database is being checked by comparison to published cross sections and geologic maps. Interpretation of the depth to Wilcox and apparent thickness maps along with published measured sections and cross sections indicates that portions of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi...

This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Fire Clay coal zone resource areas and attributed with original resources (millions of short tons) in aggregated reporting categories as described in USGS Circular 891. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. This resource model for the Fire Clay coal zone must be considered provisional, because the correlation of the zone continues to be evaluated in West Virginia.

The thickness contours were created using biostratigraphic data in the Paleo-Data, Inc., Tenroc Regional Geologic Database. The depths of the microfossil locations were associated with the wells data provided by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. Because of the proprietary nature of the Tenroc database, no actual data can be shown and only those data points contained in the Louisiana State wells database are included in the control points layer. Contouring was accomplished in Dynamic Graphics, Inc., EarthVision modeling software (v.5) using minimum tension gridding. Three custom programs were used to convert contour lines generated from grids in EarthVision to Arc/Info coverages and then to shapefiles....
This dataset is the digital compilation of geologic and resource maps provided mostly by State geologic surveys and depicts the projected area of occurrence of the Upper Freeport coal bed. The Upper Freeport coal bed is in Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western Maryland. The coal bed may extend into eastern Kentucky, but correlations are highly uncertain and do not warrant extrapolation south of the areas shown on this map at this time. This dataset represents the extent of the Upper Freeport coal bed used in the Apalachian coal region assessment. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C.

The 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea Volcano began in the late afternoon of 3 May, with fissure 1 opening and erupting lava onto Mohala Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision, part of the lower Puna District of the Island of Hawai'i. For the first week of the eruption, relatively viscous lava flowed only within a kilometer (0.6 miles) of the fissures within Leilani Estates, before activity shifted downrift (east-northeast) and out of the subdivision during mid-May. Around 18 May, activity along the lower East Rift Zone intensified, and fluid lava erupting at higher effusion rates from the downrift fissures reached the ocean within two days. Near the end of May, this more vigorous activity shifted...

This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. This dataset is the digital compilation of geologic and resource maps provided mostly by State geologic surveys and depicts the projected area of occurrence of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. The Lower Kittanning coal bed is in Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western Maryland and is an important economic coal bed in the northern part of the Appalachian Basin. It is of additional importance because it is one of the coal beds that has potential for coalbed methane development within the Allegheny Group throughout most of the Appalachian foreland basin in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. This file...

The study of the geohydrology of the Sparta Sand is the initial phase in the investigation of the geohydrology of the Claiborne Group. The thicker sections of the Sparta Sand lie along the axes of the Mississippi embayment and Desha basin. The area of maximum thickness, 1,100-1,200 feet, is in Claiborne and Warren Counties, Miss., and Madison Parish, La. Local thickening or thinning over some structures indicates structural movement during Sparta time. A sand-percentage map prepared from data derived from interpretation of electric logs indicates that the Sparta Sand was deposited as a delta-fluvial plain complex in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This complex shows a text-book example of a well-developed...

This isopach map shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Travis Peak or Hosston Formations to the top of the Cotton Valley Group. The map was produced by first subtracting the values of the top of the Travis Peak or Hosston from those of the top of the Cotton Valley Group. This resulted in a data set of 8,585 values for which locations were available. After deleting the wells with obvious data problems, a total of 8414 wells were used to generate the map. The data are provided as both lines and polygons, and the proprietary wells that penetrate this interval are graphically displayed as quarter-mile cells. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well...

This isopach map shows the thickness of the interval from the top of the Cotton Valley Group to the top of the Smackover Formation. It was necessary to contour this expanded interval, instead of just the upper part of the Cotton Valley Group, because of the limited availability of data. Ideally, just the part of the Cotton Valley Group above the Bossier Shale would have been contoured, but there are a limited number of Bossier picks in the database, and many of the Bossier picks are not at a consistent stratigraphic break (J.L. Ridgley, oral commun., 2002). Data for units below the Bossier, such as the Haynesville or Buckner Formations, are also limited on a regional basis. The Smackover Formation is the first unit...
