Quantifying biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N) and the associated fluxes to surface waters remains challenging, given the need to deal with spatial and temporal variability and to characterize complex and heterogeneous landscapes. We focused our study on catchments S14 and S15 located in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, USA, which have similar topographic and hydrologic characteristics but contrasting stream nitrate ($\hboxNO_3^-$) concentrations. We characterized the mechanisms by which $\hboxNO_3^-$ reaches the streams during hydrological events in these catchments, aiming to reconcile our field data with our conceptual model of factors that regulate nutrient exports from forested catchments. Combined...

This data release (version 1.0, August 2018) consists of two files, a Microsoft® Access database and Microsoft® Excel workbook, that contain water levels collected from 1941 to 2017 and other hydrologic information for 904 wells in and near areas of underground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Data and information in the database and workbook have been updated and are superseded by version 2.0 (December 2018) of the data release.

This data release (version 2.0, December 2018) consists of two files, a Microsoft® Access database and Microsoft® Excel workbook, that contain water levels collected from 1941 to 2018 and other hydrologic information for 910 wells in and near areas of underground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Data and information in the database and workbook have been updated and are superseded by version 3.0 (January 2020) of the data release.
Nitrate-nitrogen export from the Raccoon River watershed in west-central Iowa is among the highest in the United State and contributes to impairment of downstream water quality. We examined a rare long-term record of streamflow and nitrate concentration data (1972–2000) to evaluate annual and seasonal patterns of nitrate losses in streamflow and baseflow from the Raccoon River. Combining hydrograph separation with a load estimation program, we estimated that baseflow contributes approximately two-thirds (17.3 kg/ha) of the mean annual nitrate export (26.1 kg/ha). Baseflow transport was greatest in spring and late fall when baseflow contributed more than 80% of the total export. Herein we propose a ‘baseflow enrichment...

This dataset describes streamflow and precipitation event statistics for four watersheds located in Clarksburg, Maryland, USA. Streamflow and precipitation events were identified from fourteen years of sub-daily (5- and 15-minute) monitoring data from October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2018. A 6-hour inter-event window was used to define discrete streamflow and precipitation events. The following streamflow metrics were calculated for each event area normalized peak streamflow, runoff yield, runoff ratio, streamflow duration, time to peak, and rise rate. Precipitation event metrics include total precipitation depth and precipitation event duration.

The USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) service from The National Map is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of surface water (lakes, ponds, and reservoirs), paths through which water flows (canals, ditches, streams, and rivers), and related entities such as point features (springs, wells, stream gages, and dams).
