This article examines the issues that newly emerging hydrocarbon economies must face surrounding public expectations of how oil and gas revenues will be spent by governments. Studies of oil and gas economies have shown that public expectations have often been unrealistic, exaggerated and, at times, manipulated. The author highlights four major challenges in managing expectations: determining information-sharing requirements; developing common expectations among multiple stakeholder groups; clarifying labour–skill requirements in the oil and gas sector; and articulating environmental and social considerations impacted by the hydrocarbon sector. The article goes on to discuss policy requirements for managing expectations,...
Introduction As a result of storage and disposal practices at a former Manufactured Gas Plant, or MGP, in Bay Shore, NY, a variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been detected at high concentrations in the surficial, upper glacial aquifer of Long Island. Levels of PAHs initially detected over 10 years ago were in the parts-per-thousand range within a groundwater contaminant plume. The plume extended over a half-mile from MGP-related sources to discharge at a local estuarine tributary, Lawrence Creek, resulting, resulting in malodorous hydrocarbon sheens in this tributary and nearby storm drains. These signs of contamination revealed a larger underlying problem and prompted calls by state and local...

This geologic map and report present 1:63,360-scale geologic mapping of the south-central Sagavanirktok Quadrangle in northern Alaska. This area encompasses approximately 600 square miles in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range, and includes stratigraphic and structural elements important to understanding the oil and gas potential of Alaska's North Slope.
This map shows the subcrop pattern of the Mesozoic rock units present at the top Mesozoic unconformity (also commonly referred to as the base Tertiary unconformity) in Cook Inlet basin, Alaska. The subcrop is projected onto the top Mesozoic unconformity depth surface of Cook Inlet basin, Alaska, published by Shellenbaum and others (2010). Publicly available geologic and geophysical data from multiple sources were collected, interpreted, and integrated into the subcrop map. Formation picks at the top Mesozoic unconformity were determined for 109 wells. Mesozoic horizons from two regional marine two-dimensional (2-D) seismic datasets (approximately 3,300 miles) were interpreted. Eight map units were established for...

This Raw Data File provides lithologic descriptions of core fragments recovered from a series of core holes drilled by Exxon (mid-80s) in the uplands bordering the Yukon Flats basin. In addition to descriptions of the material, the tabulated file includes geographic location, core hole numbers, an age estimate, core fragment depth, general lithology, grain size, and facies interpretation. The author examined these core materials in Fairbanks during winter and spring 2002. This work was done in preparation for an assessment carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey of undiscovered, technically recoverable hydrocarbon resources in the Yukon Flats basin.
