Time-series data of water level, water temperature, and salinity were collected at 10 locations along west Hawaii Island between 2010 and 2011 in nearshore coral reef settings. Conductivity-temperature-depth sensors were attached to fossil limestone, rock, or dead coral within otherwise healthy coral reef settings spanning water depths of 8 to 23 ft. Continuous measurements were made every 10 or 20 minutes.

Spatial measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen between 0.25 and 0.50 m water depth were collected every 10-seconds along and across shore at 12 principal study areas along west Hawaii Island. Measurements were made between 2010 and 2013 during different seasons and tide states over the course of 1.0 to 2.5 hours to evaluate the spatial and temporal extent of water properties that influence coral reef health and coral reef habitat availability.

Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) profile data were collected along transects and across study areas of west Hawaii Island between 2010 and 2014. Measurements were made over a range of tide and weather conditions and help characterize the spatial extent and variability in estuarine conditions across the reef when grouped by 1 to 2-hour survey period or by season.

Seafloor photographs were collected by SCUBA divers along pre-determined transects using an underwater digital camera following benthic survey protocols developed by the National Park Service (NPS) at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park (Marrack and others, 2014; Weijerman and others, 2014) and modeled after the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and NPS coral reef survey protocols (Rogers and others, 2001; Brown and others, 2011). This dataset includes seafloor photographs in jpg format, the locations of which are described in the accompanying comma-separated files. The southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), also known as California sea otter, was listed as threatened in 1977 under the Endangered Species Act. Since 1985, stranded otters from throughout their California coastal range have been collected and analyzed to inform resource management on recovery and conservation of the species. This data set is a complete 34 year compilation. Future annual stranding recovery information will be published when available. Stranded sea otters were collected by members of the sea otter stranding network (USGS, California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA), and the Marine Mammal Center (TMMC)) during routine beach walks and (more often) following...

Monitoring of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the eggs of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) collected from lakes Huron and Michigan has been conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey since the mid-1990’s. The results of this monitoring effort have been used by natural resource management agencies and native American tribes within the Great Lakes basin to evaluate the reproductive health of lake trout. The data in this release are the thiamine concentrations measured in lake trout collected from 1996-2018. Results are reported as total thiamine (nmol/g-egg), collection site, lake, year collected, and reference to the analysis methods.

Environmental variation has important effects on host-pathogen interactions, affecting large-scale ecological processes such as the severity and frequency of epidemics. However, less is known about how the environment modulates viral fitness traits and within host infection processes. Viral genetic variation, fish host immune response and environmental parameters such as temperature have been reported to strongly influence the replication and clearance of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), a significant pathogen of salmon and trout. Here, we quantified the effect of water temperature on probability of infection across time following exposure of steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to a field isolate of IHNV....

This dataset consists of 262 variables which describe various known and suspected point and non-point sources of contaminants and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) throughout the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Contaminant data was summarized to the NHDPlus Version 2.1 catchment level (1:100K). Contaminant data summarized span a time range of 2001 to 2016 and include regulated facilities, pesticides, manure and biosolids application data, mercury deposition, animal feeding applications, septic systems, landfills, and land use and land cover. These data are presented in a comma separated file, which includes all variables summarized and the NHDPlus Version 2.1 FEATUREID field (also known as COMID). The FEATUREID field...

Observations of coral disease and health indicators were documented by scuba divers along pre-determined transects and are presented here in comma-separated format. Included in the table are coral species observed, colony size, types and number of indicators observed, and a size range of indicators observed.
(i) Severe perkinsea data was based on the observation of characteristic gross and microscopic lesions and the morphological identification of Perkinsea organisms within the lesions. Necropsies and gross evaluation of carcasses were carried out under a dissecting microscope. Specimen were collected and submitted to the NWHC as part of mortality investigations and collection of specimen from apparently healthy populations as part of ongoing amphibian health monitoring. (ii) Epidemiological information was compiled from each anuran sample, including the detection type (mortality event or health monitoring study), location (state and county), anuran species reported in the event, life-stage of species reported in the...

Wild waterfowl (family Anatidae) are reported as secondary transmitters of HPAIV and primary reservoirs for low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses, yet spatial inputs for disease risk modeling for this group have been lacking. Using geographic information software and Monte Carlo simulations, we developed geospatial indices of waterfowl abundance at 1 km resolutions for the breeding and wintering seasons for China, the epicenter of H5N1. Two types of spatial layers were developed: cumulative waterfowl abundance (WAB), a measure of predicted abundance by species, and cumulative abundance weighted by H5N1 prevalence (WPR), whereby abundance for each species was adjusted based on species specific prevalence values....

Data described herein was collected by USGS personnel and the project funded by USGS. Northern snakehead specimens were collected from the Potomac River and its tributaries by regional natural resource management agencies in the course of their field investigations working with this priority invasive aquatic species. Specimens were provided to USGS for the purpose of conducting health related assessments of northern snakehead in the region, with approximately 90 specimens evaluated grossly and histologically for the presence of lesions and abnormalities. Data presented here was collected seasonally (spring through fall) in 2006 and from 2015 to 2017. Data for each specimen includes date and location of collection,...
Snake fungal disease (SFD) is an emerging disease of wild snakes in eastern North America caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola. Recently, the disease has also been detected in wild snake in Europe. The data presented here describe: 1) culture, PCR, and histopathology results of wild European snakes opportunistically sampled for O. ophiodiicola, 2) colony expansion rates of various isolates of O. ophiodiicola from Europe and North America, and 3) DNA sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree files.

Time-series data of water temperature were collected at 33 locations along the west coast of the Island of Hawaii, including within Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park (KAHO), and Puu o Honaunau National Historical Park (PUHO) between 2010 and 2013 in nearshore coral reef and anchialine pool settings. Temperature sensors were attached to fossil limestone, rock or dead coral within otherwise healthy coral reef settings spanning water depths of 0.1 to 8.84 m (0.3 to 29.0 ft). Continuous measurements were made every 10 or 20 minutes. Due to the large amount of data, the dataset has been split into three files. WaterTempTimeSeries_KAHO-KC.csv includes data from nearshore coral reef locations within Kaloko Bay,...

Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is an acute pathogen of salmonids in North America, Europe and Asia that is phylogenetically classified into five major virus genogroups (U, M, L, E and J). The geographic range of the U and M genogroup isolates overlap in the North American Columbia River Basin and Washington Coast region, where these genogroups pose different risks depending on the species of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). For certain management decisions, there is a need to both test for IHNV presence and rapidly determine the genogroup. Herein, we report the development and validation of a U/M multiplex reverse transcription, real-time PCR (RT-rPCR) assay targeting the IHNV nucleocapsid (N)...
