The central Platte River Valley represents a key mid-latitude stopover This dataset supports a contemporary analysis of nocturnal roost selection for sandhill cranes staging along the Platte River during 2003-2007. We explored variation in selection for previously established characteristics of roost sites, including river channel width, vegetation height along the river bank, and distance to nearest disturbance feature. This analysis also included novel environmental factors (yearly estimates of corn near roost sites, nightly temperature, wind speed, and river discharge) and how they may interact with the more established characteristics.

We conducted a radio telemetry study of adult western spadefoots (Spea hammondii) at 2 sites in southern California to characterize their survival, behavior, and movements from breeding through aestivation to inform conservation and management for the species. These data support the following publication: Halstead, B.J., Baumberger, K.L., Backlin, A.R., Kleeman, P.M., Wong, M.N., Gallegos, E.A., Rose, J.P., and Fisher, R.N., 2021. Conservation implications of spatiotemporal variation in the terrestrial ecology of an ephemeral pool-breeding amphibian. The Journal of Wildlife Management.

Diploid and triploid Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella) tagged with acoustic transmitters were observed in Truman Reservoir, Missouri from February 2017 to March 2019 to determine habitat usage in winter. Habitat parameters were measured at used and available sites to model habitat preference. In addition, tagged fish were targeted during removal attempts to determine the efficacy of using tagged Judas Grass Carp in removing wild conspecifics. This dataset includes information on tagged Grass Carp and habitats they selected as well as capture events and characteristics of the wild fish caught during these attempts.
The data are part of a larger, long-term project of lesser scaup on Lower Red Rock Lake, Montana, 2004-2015, conducted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This segment of the data has summarized results of late summer resighting surveys of nasal-marked adult females and GIS-derived habitat attributes. Scaup resighting surveys were conducted mid-August to early September, 2007-2013. The study site was divided into 16 survey plots (as shown as grid in figure); each plot comprised one to four 750 × 750 m survey blocks such that plots contained roughly equivalent area of open water Survey data included GPS location, number, and social status of marked females, wind conditions, and group size of other scaup associated...

These data describe differences in percent cover of microhabitats and vegetation types at giant gartersnake locations and random points paired with giant gartersnake locations for use in case-control logistic regression. The data also include information on the individual snake, the year of observation, and whether the individual had moved from its previous location to allow for correlation of the data within individuals and locations

habitat selection
Step selection functions use animal movement patterns to estimate habitats available at each step along a movement track. These data were generated from four species of waterfowl (Anser albifrons [greater white-fronted goose], Anser caerulescens caerulescens [lesser snow goose], Anas platyrhynchos [mallard], Anas acuta [northern pintail]) using the Central Valley of California 2016 to 2022 that were fit with tracking devices collecting GPS data every hour (or subset to hourly locations). Observed movements were used to estimate a 2-mixture log-normal step length distribution for each species. The shorter mean step length mixture generally reflected step lengths consistent with individual immobility and GPS errors....

These data describe coarse habitat use, activity information, and differences between used and available microhabitats and vegetation types to provide information about the behavior and habitat relationships of adult female giant gartersnakes (Thamnophis gigas) associated with a restored marsh in the Sacramento Valley of California. These data support the following publication: Brian J. Halstead, Patricia Valcarcel, Glenn D. Wylie, Peter S. Coates, Michael L. Casazza, and Daniel K. Rosenberg (2016) Active Season Microhabitat and Vegetation Selection by Giant Gartersnakes Associated with a Restored Marsh in California. Telemetry data for 59 Northern Leopard Frogs (Lithobates pipiens) breeding in ponds in Houston and Winona Counties, MN; 2001-2002. Agricultural intensification is causing declines in many wildlife species, including Northern Leopard Frogs (Lithobates pipiens). Specific information about frog movements, habitat selection, and sources of mortality can be used to inform conservation-focused land management and acquisition. We studied Northern Leopard Frogs in southeastern Minnesota, part of the Driftless Area ecoregion, characterized by hills and valleys and a mix of agriculture, forests, small towns and farmsteads. In this area, small farm ponds, originally built to control soil erosion are used by the species for...

We developed habitat selection models for Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus), a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. We followed a management-centric modeling approach that sought to balance the need to evaluate the consistency of key habitat conditions and improvement actions across multiple, distinct populations, while allowing context-specific environmental variables and spatial scales to nuance selection responses. Models were developed for six isolated satellite populations (San Miguel, Crawford, Piñon Mesa, Dove Creek, Cerro Summit-Cimarron-Sims, and Poncha Pass) from use locations collected between 1991 and 2016 (see larger citation for map of population boundaries). For each...
