This dataset provides groundwater ages estimates that were used in an assessment of the penetration depth of modern groundwater in the Central Valley aquifer system (CVAL). Groundwater ages were estimated by calibration of environmental tracers (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, chlorofluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14 and radiogenic helium-4) to lumped parameter models (LPMs) for samples from 650 sample locations. Groundwater samples were collected from wells (mainly drinking-water) in the CVAL between 2004 and 2017 as part of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP) and the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA)...
Chemical and isotopic analyses are reported for water samples collected from water supply wells, a geothermal well in the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) power plant, a hot spring in the Puna District, a research well on the summit of Kīlauea Volcano (informally called “NSF Well”, or “Keller Well ”), and a water catchment in the headquarters area of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i. These water samples were collected and analyzed as part of research investigations on the potential impact of the 2018 Kilauea lower East Rift Zone and summit eruption on water supplies. The presented data allow for a comparison with data from an investigation carried out prior to the 2018 eruption (Evans and others, 2015 ). Water...

Data in this release were collected and computed to evaluate the occurrence of pesticides in shallow groundwater in the state of Alabama. Additionally, these data support interpretation in Gill (2023) for a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. During 2009-2020, samples were collected from twenty-four wells located near agricultural land use in Alabama and evaluated for concentrations of agricultural pesticides and pesticide degradates. Most data produced from the sampling effort are available from the publicly accessible USGS National Water Information System (NWIS; U.S. Geological Survey, 2023). For certain pesticide compounds, data were...

Groundwater from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA), coincident with the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP), is a vital resource for agriculture and drinking-water supplies in the central United States. Water availability can be limited in some areas of the aquifer by high concentrations of salinity, measured as specific conductance. Boosted regression trees (BRT), a type of ensemble-tree machine-learning method, were used to predict specific conductance concentration at multiple depths throughout the MRVA and underlying aquifers. Two models were created to test the incorporation of datasets from a regional aerial electromagnetic (AEM) survey and evaluate model performance. Explanatory variables...

This data release documents time-series analyses of aqueous-chemistry data from public-supply wells (PSWs) and associated potential explanatory factors to characterize responses of groundwater quality to drought and recovery periods in California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during 2000-2022. Annual median nitrate values were computed for PSWs throughout the SJV during the period of study. Median annual nitrate values were calculated at all PSWs with available data in the SJV, resulting in a total of 698 PSWs with complete annual records after single-year linear gap imputation. A total of 237 of these records were classified as “low variance” because they contained proportions of identical values exceeding 80 percent...
We tested three models of mixing between old interbasin groundwater flow (IGF) and young, locally derived groundwater in a lowland rain forest in Costa Rica using a large suite of environmental tracers. We focus on the young fraction of water using the transient tracers CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113, SF6, 3H, and bomb 14C. We measured 3He, but 3H/3He dating is generally problematic due to the presence of mantle 3He. Because of their unique concentration histories in the atmosphere, combinations of transient tracers are sensitive not only to subsurface travel times but also to mixing between waters having different travel times. Samples fall into three distinct categories: (1) young waters that plot along a piston flow...

Data used to model and map pH and redox conditions in groundwater in the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain aquifer system, eastern USA, are documented in this data release. The models use as input data measurements of pH and dissolved oxygen concentrations at about 3000 to 5000 wells, which were compiled primarily from U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency databases. The boosted regression trees machine learning method was used to build the models. Explanatory variables (predictors) describe geology, hydrology, chemistry, physical characteristics, anthropogenic influence, metrics from a groundwater flow model, and groundwater residence times in the aquifer system. Data for four models are...

Groundwater is a vital resource in the Mississippi embayment of the central United States. An innovative approach using machine learning (ML) was employed to predict groundwater salinity—including specific conductance (SC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and chloride (Cl) concentrations—across three drinking-water aquifers of the Mississippi embayment. A ML approach was used because it accommodates a large and diverse set of explanatory variables, does not assume monotonic relations between predictors and response data, and results can be extrapolated to areas of the aquifer not sampled. These aspects of ML allowed potential drivers and sources of high salinity water that have been hypothesized in other studies to...

This dataset describes plume boundary extents for 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT) in the vicinity of the Badger Army Ammunition Plant in Sauk County, Wisconsin for various time intervals between 2000 - 2018.
One anticipated benefit of ecosystem restoration is water quality improvement. This study evaluated NO3-N and phosphorus in subsurface waters during prairie establishment following decades of row-crop agriculture. A prairie seeding in late 2003 became established in 2006. Wells and suction cup samplers were monitored for NO3-N and phosphorus. Nitrate-N varied with time and landscape position. Non-detectable NO3-N concentrations became modal along ephemeral drainageways in 2006, when average concentrations in uplands first became <10 mg NO3-N L−1. This decline continued and upland groundwater averaged near 2 mg NO3-N L−1 after 2007. The longer time lag in NO3-N response in uplands was attributed to greater quantities...

This dataset contains summarized historical groundwater salinity observations from wells near the Lost Hills and Belridge oil fields in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley, Kern County, California. Total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration, electrical fluid conductivity (EC), and well construction information were aggregated from public data sources and local water management agencies. Trends in total-dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations and fluid conductivity were assessed on a well-by-well basis to develop a dataset of salinity observations to support the interpretation of resistivity data derived from an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey flown in October 2016. Results of the trend analysis were used to...

Data and preliminary machine-learning models used to predict manganese and 1,4-dioxane in groundwater on Long Island are documented in this data release. Concentration data used to develop the models were from 910 wells for manganese and 553 wells for 1,4-dioxane, primarily public supply wells, from U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and Suffolk County Water Authority sources. Thirty-two explanatory variables describe depth, groundwater flow, land use, soil properties, and other features of the aquifer system. The models use XGBoost, an ensemble tree machine learning method. Four models are documented for manganese, predicting the probability of concentrations relative to four...

Evaluating Decadal Changes in Groundwater Quality: Groundwater-quality data were collected from 5,000 wells between 1988-2001 (first decadal sampling event) by the National Water-Quality Assessment Project. Samples are collected in groups of 20-30 wells with similar characteristics called networks. About 1,500 of these wells in 67 networks were sampled again approximately 10 years later between 2002-2012 (second sampling event) to evaluate decadal changes in groundwater quality. Between 2012 and 2022 (third sampling event), a subset of these networks were sampled again, allowing additional results to be displayed on the web page: Decadal changes in groundwater quality (https://nawqatrends.wim.usgs.gov/decadal/)....
