Data release for cosmogenic beryllium-10 exposure ages of moraine boulders in the Stura Valley, Maritime Alps, northwestern Italy
This report summarizes the cosmogenic beryllium-10 (10Be) geochronologic results from boulders deposited on moraines in the Stura Valley of the Maritime Alps, the southwestern most extent of the European Alpine mountain chain, northwestern Italy. Within this report are detailed the methodologies used to collect samples of whole rock, determine the concentrations of cosmogenic 10Be in purified quartz isolated from those samples, and use those nuclide concentrations to calculate surface exposure ages. This report should be used as supplementary material for any publication(s) that uses the nuclide concentrations and/or ages reported herein. This version supersedes all previous age estimates and reports.
Aerial photography surveys during and after the 2018 eruption of Veniaminof Volcano, Alaska were conducted to track the evolution of the lava flow field, active volcanic vent, and glacial ice loss from the eruption. Imagery from two surveys was processed with structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetric methods to derive the digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthophotos in this data release. Slow-moving landslides and subsiding fan deltas mapped from Sentinel-1 InSAR in the Glacier Bay region, Alaska and British Columbia, 2018-2020
This data release contains four GIS shapefiles, one Google Earth kmz file, and five metadata files that summarize results from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) analyses in the Glacier Bay region of Alaska and British Columbia. The principal shapefile (Moving_Ground) and the kmz file (GBRegionMovingGround) contain polygons delineating slow-moving (0.5-6 cm/year in the radar line-of-sight direction) landslides and subsiding fan deltas in the region. Landslides and fan deltas were identified from displacement signals captured by InSAR interferograms of Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar images. This digital map shows the areal extent of surficial deposits and rock stratigraphic units (formations) as compiled by Trimble and Machette from 1973 to 1977 and published in 1979 under the Front Range Urban Corridor Geology Program. Trimble and Machette compiled their geologic map from published geologic maps and unpublished geologic mapping having varied map unit schemes. A convenient feature of the compiled map is its uniform classification of geologic units that mostly matches those of companion maps to the north (USGS I-855-G) and to the south (USGS I-857-F). Understanding what capacities are needed and if and or where these capacities exist across the USGS landscape is critical in moving science to the next level of use, implementation, and visualization. The concept behind the groups organized to conduct and interpret the survey that collected these data took advantage of the USGS’s position as a science organization with expertise spanning a wide range of science disciplines, stakeholders, and responsibilities. The lateral blast, debris avalanche, pyroclastic flows, and lahars of the May 18th, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. The debris avalanche and pyroclastic flows filled upper North Fork Toutle River valley and blocked the outlet of Spirit Lake. To mitigate the risk of a catastrophic breach, lake outflow was pumped over the blockage prior to rerouting through a 2.6-kilometer long tunnel completed in 1985 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. However, periodic major repairs to the tunnel have caused responsible parties to reevaluate long-term lake outlet options.
