Background information. This fuels reduction project, which was conducted by the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) Rio Puerco Field Office, consisted of woodland habitat restoration in the Zuni Mountains approximately 45 miles south of Grants, New Mexico. Topography of the landscape includes mesas and canyons, with north-facing slopes dominated by stands of ponderosa pine with an open, grassy understory. Like other places in the American West, pinyon and juniper have encroached into open meadows and stands of ponderosa pine, which is most likely because of the lack of a natural fire regime. This change to the wooded landscape has dramatically increased hazardous fuels buildup and the associated risk of wildfire,...
Colorados Front Range represents a region of the Southern Rockies LCC that is both ecologically and economically significant. It is home to the majority of Colorados residents, including the major population centers of Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, and provides critical ecosystem services such as clean and abundant water, wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and aesthetic values to the rest of the state. Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated forests span the majority of the Front Range mountains and foothills, covering approximately 700,000 acres of the Front Range landscape between 5000 and 8500 ft elevation. The lower-montane zone ponderosa pine forests (~5500-7000 ft) form the...

Due to a gap in information on regeneration of hard-mast trees in the floodplain, interpretation was completed of existing 8“/pixel aerial imagery delineating a detailed hardwood forest spatial dataset within the floodplain forest of the Fish and Wildlife Upper Mississippi National Wildlife & Fish Refuge, McGregor District. The detailed map of bottomland hardwoods will allow for the identification of existing habitat and assess bottomland hardwood tree patterns to enable management of these areas.

BLM has the ability to enter into “Stewardship Contracts” to make forests and rangelands more resilient to natural disturbances. The contracts allow companies and communities to retain forest and rangeland products in exchange for services like thinning trees and brush or removing dead wood. Long-term contracts foster a public-private partnership to restore forest and rangeland health at a savings to taxpayers by allowing contractors to invest in equipment and infrastructure for making wood products or producing biomass energy. The Gerber Stew Stewardship Contract was awarded in September 2004 to a firm based in Bend, Oregon to implement restoration treatments and projects in BLM’s Klamath Falls Resource Area....
The overall project goal is to understand and model the watershed impacts of forest restoration actions (thinning, prescribed fire) and climate change on the hydrologic function, particularly with respect to (1) changes in soil moisture and water yield during snowmelt, (2) inter-annual and directional changes in stream water quality, and (3) the resulting impacts on watershed management for wildlife species threatened by disturbance and climate change.Specifically, we will: use known relationships of forest structure on snow-water equivalent (SWE) values and processes of sublimation (ablation), infiltration and run-off in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico to model forest-stand restoration prescriptions,...

Northern Arizona University will study how forest treatment practices and climate change may impact water balance across the Kaibab Plateau and critical habitats in lower elevations of the Grand Canyon. The project will include use of a forest landscape simulation model to examine how fuel treatments and prescribed burning will affect the resilience of forest ecosystems. The project will also address whether those activities would benefit the conservation of downstream riparian habitat by mitigating anticipated changes in the stream flow and water quality. The model will assist managers in developing, adaptation strategies for the conservation of riparian habitats by testing a range of realistic fuel treatment and...
