These data were compiled to explore the foraging ecology of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona. These data represent samples characterizing the availability of drifting invertebrate prey (hereafter, drift) and use of these invertebrate prey by rainbow trout determined by gut samples (hereafter, diets). Drift and diet sampling occurred in five distinct reaches downstream of Glen Canyon Dam (river kilometer (rkm) from the dam): (I) rkm 16.3-21.7; (II) rkm 52.8-58.3; (III) rkm 86.6-91.9; (IV) rkm 122.0-123.6; and (V) rkm 127.1-129.6. Samples were taken on 12 trips in April, July, September and January from April 2012 through January 2015. The aquatic prey base consists...

Data set resulting from monitoring the behavior of snakes (n = 62) that had been feed a standardized large meal with transmitter, proportional to their body mass, to make direct comparisons to a control group of snakes that had not been fed a meal (only the transmitter). Transmitters were equipped with a two-position switch that changes pulse rate when the body position of the animal changes more than 10 degrees from the switch's preset orientation. Changes in pulse rate serve as a proxy measurement for snake activity, under the logic that a relatively stationary/sedentary snake would cause the transmitter to tip less frequently that an actively moving/foraging snake would. The experiment took place in the U.S....

Mitochondrial DNA markers have elucidated patterns of connectivity between green turtle nesting populations (rookeries) and juveniles foraging in neritic nursery habitats. However, missing rookery baseline data and haplotype sharing among populations have often impeded inferences, including ascertaining origins of Gulf of Mexico juveniles. We sequenced the mitochondrial control region and additional informative mitogenomic single nucleotide polymorphisms of juveniles foraging in Port Fourchon, Louisiana (LA, n = 127) and Santa Rosa Island, Florida (SRI, n = 47). We collected additional genetic data for previously characterized neritic aggregations in southern Texas (TX, n = 167), St. Joseph Bay, Florida (SJB, n...
Using a bioenergetic model, demographic data for the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) population were compiled and used to estimate total prey consumption in the Colorado River, Glen Canyon , AZ. Additionally, other data including invertebrate diet, drift, and benthic measurements were used to make generalized estimates of daily production rates for the most common benthic invertebrate taxa. The primary objectives were to test a set of hypotheses regarding proximate and distal drivers that were regualating secondary production of invertebrate prey in Glen Canyon. These production estimates represent an estimate of aggregate prey items that include Chironomidae and Simulium arcticum [complex]), as well as amphipods...
