Proposed invasive carp barriers may threaten populations of migratory fishes in the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area by preventing movements between rivers needed to fulfill life history requirements. Moreover, reproducing populations of invasive carp could alter aquatic food webs and negatively affect mussels and migratory fishes. In this study, nonlethal chemical techniques were used to determine the trophic positions and migratory histories of lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) captured in the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers. Stable isotope analyses demonstrated differences in trophic position among sturgeon captured in different locations among the...
Fatty acid (FA) analysis is a promising tool to study trophic relationships in soil food webs. We determined FA biomarkers to trace bacterial food sources (Bacillus megaterium, Pseudomonas putida, Enterobacter aerogenes) of Collembola (Heteromurus nitidus, Protaphorura fimata, Folsomia candida). In addition, ?15N, ?13C, C/N ratio, body weight and NLFA/PLFA ratio (neutral lipid/phospholipid fatty acids) of Collembola were assessed. These measures indicated that P. putida ranked first, B. megaterium second and E. aerogenes third in food quality. FAs specific for bacteria were found in the NLFAs of the Collembola reflecting the respective bacterial diet. Biomarker FAs for gram-positive bacteria were methyl branched...
This dataset includes information from multiple taxa collected from four main reaches in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, including La Grange reach of Illinois River, Pool 2 of Mississippi River, Pool 19 of Mississippi River, and the St. Croix River. Taxa include hydropsychid caddisflies, chironomids, hexagenia mayflies, threeridge mussels, mapleleaf mussels, Wabash pigtoe mussels, bigmouth buffalo, gizzard shad, and bluegill. Seston samples were also collected, in addition to water samples for identifying and enumerating phytoplankton species. Fatty acids, lipids, and stable isotopes were quantified for the aforementioned taxa. Water quality data were recorded at the time of sample collection and discharge data...
