Both tabular and spatial models were used to predict fire regime departure at the sub-watershed scale (i.e., HUC 10 units). Integrating the fire regime models with predicted changes in climate envelopes provides a clearer understanding of how these ecological systems are likely to respond to multiple stresses. This dataset was derived from 'NatureServe L48 ESLF V2.7'. See process steps for additional information. The dataset represents the work of multiple states and Federal agencies as part of the US Gap Analysis and LandFire programs. Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+) from 1999-2001 were used in conjunction with digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform) to model natural and semi-natural vegetation. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is approximately 1 acre. Landcover classes are drawn from NatureServe's Ecological System concept. Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP) are planning documents required as part of an application for an incidental take permit under section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973. They describe the anticipated effects of the proposed taking, how those impacts will be minimized, or mitigated; and how the HCP is to be funded. HCPs can apply to both federally listed and non-listed species, including those that are candidates or have been proposed for listing. Conserving species before they are in danger of extinction or are likely to become so can also provide early benefits and prevent the need for listing.

Encroachment of woody plants into grasslands, and subsequent brush management, are among the most prominent changes to occur in arid and semiarid systems over the past century. Despite the resulting widespread changes in landcover, substantial uncertainty about the biogeochemical impacts of woody proliferation and brush management exists. This shape file represents an ecological boundary for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE) as defined by the Crown Managers Partnership (CMP). The CMP developed the boundary through a series of meetings held in 2008, including a meeting between the CMP and non government organizations working in the Crown on July 23, 2008. The purpose of this exercise was to develop an ecological justification for the CCE, to enable analysis and tracking of the ecosystem from an ecological health perspective.
