This dataset provides an estimate of landscape intactness (i.e. condition) across the mountain lion's potential distribution. Current terrestrial intactness estimates are based on the extent to which human impacts such as agriculture, urban development, natural resource extraction, and invasive species have disrupted the landscape across the Colorado Plateau Ecoregion. Terrestrial intactness values will be high in areas where these impacts are low. This 1 km2 resolution dataset (v2_13F) was created for the Colorado Plateau REA stepdown analysis using the open-source logic modeling framework Environmental Evaluation Modeling System (EEMS). Spatially-explicit logic modeling hierarchically integrates numerous and diverse...

The Sevilleta LTER supports a long-term, integrated, interdisciplinary research program addressing key hypotheses on pattern and process in aridland ecosystems. Sevilleta LTER research includes studies in desert grassland and shrubland communities, and riparian and mountain forests emphasizing pulse driven processes in space and time. Key drivers (e.g., climate, fire, water, resource availability) govern dynamics in each landscape component. Our focus on how biotic and abiotic drivers affect spatial and temporal dynamics of aridland ecosystems allows us to conduct long-term research that addresses important basic theories and yet has significant relevance to regional, national and international priorities. The...

Selected GIS datasets for the Southwestern Region are available for download from this page. Use of most of these files requires GIS software such as ArcGIS, ArcView, ArcInfo or ArcExplorer. Most of these datasets are provided in ArcView shapefile (shp) format. ArcExplorer, a free, basic GIS software package available from ESRI will read the data in shapefile format (ESRI and the ESRI Logo are licensed trademarks of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.). Some datasets will also have related tables that can be used with the geographic data. Tabular data will be in Microsoft Excel format. All files have been compressed with zip and can be uncompressed with programs such as WinZip. Be aware that some of the...

The Southwest Regional Gap Analysis Project (SWReGAP) is an update of the Gap Analysis Program’s mapping and assessment of biodiversity for the five-state region encompassing Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. It is a multi-institutional cooperative effort coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Program. The primary objective of the update is to use a coordinated mapping approach to create detailed, seamless GIS maps of land cover, all native terrestrial vertebrate species, land stewardship, and management status, and to analyze this information to identify those biotic elements that are underrepresented on lands managed for their long term conservation or are “gaps.”

This dataset represents ecological districts within Canada. Ecodistricts are a subdivision of an ecoregion characterized by a distinctive assemblages of relief, landforms, geology, soil, vegetation, water bodies and fauna. For example, the Jeddore Lake ecodistrict (no. 473) is one of five within the Maritime Barrens ecoregion. Ecodistricts are the smallest ecological unit currently mapped by the Canada Ecological Stratification Working Group. The largest ecological unit assigned in Canada (Ecozone) of which each ecodistrict is contained is also included in the attribute table. Further information on assigned ecozone, ecoregion and ecodistrict numbers can be found at (http://sis.agr.gc.ca/cansis/nsdb/ecostrat/intro.html).
P>1. Habitats are often connected by fluxes of energy and nutrients across their boundaries. For example, headwater streams are linked to surrounding riparian vegetation through invertebrate and leaf litter inputs, and there is evidence that consumers in downstream habitats are subsidised by resources flowing from headwater systems. However, the strength of these linkages and the manner in which potential headwater subsidies vary along climatic and disturbance gradients are unknown. 2. We quantified the downstream transport of invertebrates, organic matter and inorganic sediment from 60 fishless headwater streams in the Wenatchee River Basin located on the eastern slope of the Cascade Range in Washington, U.S.A....
