Please note: a more recent version of this dataset is available. Users are strongly advised to access the newer version of the dataset at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9YGUE2V. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, produced a dataset through 2017 of compaction values in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in the Houston‐Galveston region, Texas. This dataset contains compaction values of subsurface sediments (mostly in the fine-grained silt and clay layers because little compaction occurs in sand layers) in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers that were recorded continuously...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, Brazoria County Groundwater Conservation District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, has produced this dataset of water-level changes and approximate water-level altitudes in the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in the Houston-Galveston region, Texas. This dataset shows current-year (2015-2016) water-level changes for each aquifer, 5-year (2011-2016) water-level changes for each aquifer, long-term (1990-2016 and 1977-2016) water-level changes for the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers, and long-term (2000-2016) water-level changes for the Jasper aquifer. The...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Harris‐Galveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, and the Fort Bend Subsidence District, produced a dataset through 2019 of compaction values in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in the Houston‐Galveston region, Texas. This dataset contains compaction values of subsurface sediments (mostly in the fine-grained silt and clay layers because little compaction occurs in sand layers) in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers that were recorded continuously by using analog technology at the 13 extensometers at 11 sites that were either activated or installed between 1973 and 1980. At 2 of the 11 sites, two extensometers are installed at different depths (one shallow...
We investigated soil compaction and hydrologic responses from mechanically shredding Utah juniper (Juniperus ostesperma [Torr.] Little) to control fuels in a sagebrush/bunchgrass plant community (Artemisia nova A. Nelson, Artemisia tridentata Nutt. subsp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young/Pseudoroegneria spicata [Pursh] A. Lve, Poa secunda J. Presl) on a gravelly loam soil with a 15% slope in the Onaqui Mountains of Utah. Rain simulations were applied on 0.5-m2 runoff plots at 64 mm h?1 (dry run: soil initially dry) and 102 mm h?1 (wet run: soil initially wet). Runoff and sediment were collected from runoff plots placed in five blocks, each containing four microsites (juniper mound, shrub mound, vegetation-free or...

In 2004 U.S. Geological Survey biologists recorded vegetation and biological soil crust (BSC) cover by species as well as measured soil stability and compaction data along 85 transects at the Badger Wash study area in western Colorado. Soil samples were collected and processed for chemistry and texture. Using analysis of variance and nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) we assessed the cover of vegetation and BSC both grouped by plant physiognomy and dynamic soil properties (soil chemistry/nutrients and stability and compaction) as influenced by the effects of grazing history and soil group (which varied by slope, topographic wetness index and soil properties). Vegetation and BSC cover data were also compared...
