Invasive species are a concern worldwide as they can displace native species, reduce biodiversity, and disrupt ecological processes. European bird cherry (Prunus padus) (EBC) is an invasive ornamental tree that is rapidly spreading and possibly displacing native trees along streams in parts of urban Alaska. The objectives of this study were to: 1) map the current distribution of EBC along two Anchorage streams, Campbell and Chester creeks, and 2) determine the effects of EBC on selected ecological processes linked to stream salmon food webs. The geographic distribution of stream reaches with potential to support high quality habitat for salmonids has bearing on the actual status of habitats and populations over broad spatial extents. As part of the Coastal Landscape Analysis and Modeling Study (CLAMS), we examined how salmon-habitat potential was distributed relative to current and future (+100 years) landscape characteristics in the Coastal Province of Oregon, USA. The intrinsic potential to provide high-quality rearing habitat was modeled for juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and juvenile steelhead (O. mykiss) based on stream flow, valley constraint, and stream gradient. The Cook Inlet Planning Area includes and abuts productive commercial, subsistence, and sport fishing grounds. Outer continental shelf minerals exploration, development and production activities could affect the productivity of these fisheries, the quality of recreation opportunities, and the demand for tourism-related services. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the use of PIT tags and underwater antennas to measure juvenile salmon growth rates and site fidelity. Juvenile coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytsha) growth rates and site fidelity were compared between two streams within the Susitna River drainage in Southcentral Alaska. The two study streams were selected to represent a low-sloped wetland stream which is common on the west side of the drainage and a moderate sloped upland stream that drains the Talkeetna mountains which is common on the east side of the drainage.
