Information on geomorphological andbiological features for 1,095 km of shoreline mapped from the 2013 coastalimaging survey of St. Lawrence Island. The habitat inventory is comprised of 1,994along-shore segments (units), averaging 550 m in length (note that the AK Coast1:63,360 digital shoreline shows this mapping area encompassing 908 km, butmapping data based on better digital shorelines represent the same area with 1,095km stretching along the coast).

Understanding the causes of relative sea level rise requires knowledge of changes to both land (uplift and subsidence) and sea level. However, measurements of coastal uplift or subsidence are almost completely lacking in western Alaska. This project provided precise measurements of prioritized benchmarks across the Western Alaska geography, improving the network of published tidal benchmark elevations, allowing for tidal datum conversion in more places, and providing a necessary component for improved inundation studies in coastal communities and low-lying areas. Western Alaska is a remote region with many small, isolated communities situated in low-lying coastal environments that are sensitive to variations in local relative sea level (RSL). Quantification of RSL variation requires measured vertical velocities for both tectonic motion (onshore component) and the ocean surface (offshore component). During the summers of 2013 and 2014, campaign GPS surveys of geodetic benchmarks were undertaken to produce statistically significant velocity measurements of the tectonic component of sea level change for the region. This project used existing ShoreZone coastal imagery to map 719 km of shoreline in Bristol Bay, from Cape Constantine to Cape Newenham. This section of coastline is an extremely important herring spawning area and an important component of the Bristol Bay fisheries. Intertidal and nearshore vegetation, on which herring spawn, was catalogued as part of the mapping and, along with shore types, coastal substrate, and coastal biota, added to the state-wide ShoreZone dataset.​

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) initiated the development of an Arctic Coastal Impressions booklet and photographic exhibit. In the exhibit, there were dozens of spectacular photos of the Arctic coastline. The images were collected along 10,000 km (6,000 mi) of shoreline in Alaska during 2012 and 2013. Many of the images were selected for their artistic composition – sculpted shapes, mosaics of colors or juxtaposition of odd features. They also provide insight into how coastal landforms develop and the significance of these features within the broader Arctic ecosystem. Each image has a story to tell and interpretive materials will accompany the collection.

Fragile barrier islands are important nesting habitat for focal species of the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative, such as brown pelicans, sea turtles, and black skimmers. Assessing the vulnerability of coastal ecosystems at a Gulf of Mexico-wide scale has become even more important in the wake of several destructive storms (e.g. Katrina, Rita, and Ike) and the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Research on coastal change in Western Alaska has increased rapidly in recent years, making it challenging to track existing projects, understand their cumulative insights, gauge remaining research gaps, and prioritize future research. This project identified existing coastal change projects in Western Alaska that were happening in 2014, scheduled for 2015 or occured in 2012-2014. The report (below) provides a synthesis of information about each project category, and an associated online database (see ACCAP project page link below) describes individual projects and information on how to contact the project leader. In 1957, Henry (Hank) Hansen and Jim King identified important habitat for molting geese in an area now referred to as the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area (TLSA) in northern Alaska. Located within the larger National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-AK), the importance of this habitat was reaffirmed by the Secretary of Interior in 1977 with the designation of the TLSA. In 1976, the Waterfowl Department of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management-Alaska (MBM-AK) began conducting aerial goose surveys within an area of the TLSA that they designated as the Traditional Survey Area. Static occupations of tidal and geodetic benchmarks in Western Alaska were undertaken in the summers of 2013 and 2014. Project accomplishments far exceeded the proposed project objective of obtaining and sharing data for benchmarks in 8 different communities; in total, this work has resulted in the occupation of 44 benchmarks in 15 different communities. 32 of these datasets met National Geodetic Survey (NGS) minimum criteria for ‘shared solutions’ and have been uploaded to the Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) shared public database. The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment utilized expert opinion that was gathered through the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value (SIVVA) tool, which is an Excel-based vulnerability and prioritization tool that enables assessors to provide input in a relatively short time and allows for relatively seamless compilation of results.The vulnerability of each ecosystem and associated species was conducted by subregion, excluding those subregions where the species did not occur in significant numbers.
