Dataset created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to identify major global ecofloristic zones. It was used by the IPCC to categorize carbon stock estimates. Each of the 20 ecoregions are characterized by their temperature regime (tropical, subtropical, temperate, boreal, and polar) and their vegetation type (humid forest, dry forest, moist deciduous forest, shrubland, steppe, desert, etc.).
Spatially explicit forest carbon (C) monitoring aids conservation and climate change mitigation efforts, yet few approaches have been developed specifically for the highly heterogeneous landscapes of oceanic island chains that continue to undergo rapid and extensive forest C change. We developed an approach for rapid mapping of aboveground C density (ACD; units = Mg or metric tons C ha−1) on islands at a spatial resolution of 30 m (0.09 ha) using a combination of cost-effective airborne LiDAR data and full-coverage satellite data. This global gridded dataset depicts vegetation biomass carbon stocks at the native processing resolution of 0.0089 decimal degrees (~1km by ~1km). We used the mean aggregate ArcInfo command to resample this dataset to 5 and 10 minute spatial resolution (please note that the 10 minute data includes the extent of Antarctica, while the others do not). The 1km data is expressed in 0.01 tons of biomass carbon per hectare, while the 5 and 10 minute data are expressed in tons of biomass carbon per hectare; soil carbon stocks are not included.
