The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center developed a Monarch Relevant Land Cover data set covering the area of Canada. We used the 2010 land cover data set produced by the tri-national North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) and supported by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) that depicts year 2010 land cover across North America at 30-meter spatial resolution, and incorporated additional spatially-explicit information to develop this land cover map. Additional sources of information included 2004 railroad data provided by The Atlas of Canada and the CEC, 2017 roads data provided by Statistics Canada, 2017 protected areas data provided by the CEC, and 2016 Canada provincial/territory...

The dataset consists of abundance information of butterfly species (61 species) collected at 25 sites in northwest Indiana in 1998 and 1999. Each site was surveyed 21 times. Auxiliary data on environmental conditions were collected to allow us to relate habitat differences among sites to differences in abundance and composition of the butterfly community.

These data identify, in general, the areas of Final critical habitat for Euphydryas editha quino (Quino checkerspot butterfly).

There are three widely used neonicotinoid seed coat formulations that protect young crop plants (e.g. corn and soybean) against pest herbivory (thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and chlothianidin). These insecticides are systemic, meaning they can be absorbed and distributed throughout the plant. Once seeds germinate, the insecticides are translocated throughout the growing corn plant[6]. When the plant is consumed by herbivorous insects, the insect also consumes and is affected by the toxicity of the insecticide. Not all of the neonicotinoid insecticide remains with the seed or growing corn plant. Owing to their high water solubility, a portion of the insecticide is leached away from the seed reaching groundwater and...

This project will develop a principle method for the estimation of monarch butterfly colony sizes as informed by technological innovations derived from (1) LiDAR, (2) object-driven, quantitative 3D modeling, (3) thermography and associated visualization and analytical capabilities and; establish the foundation of a science communication and public education strategy for USFWS to increase awareness and support for science-based approaches to Monarch conservation.

The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center developed a Monarch Butterfly Relevant Land Cover data set covering the conterminous United States of America. This data set was used primarily to assist in forecasting the number of milkweed stems on the landscape. Milkweed are required by monarch butterflies for reproduction and one possible cause for the decline in monarch butterfly numbers is thought to be the loss of milkweed. We used the Cropland Data Layer 2015 as well as additional spatially explicit information to develop the monarch relevant land cover data set. Additional sources of information included 2014 United States Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program enrollment locations; railroad,...
