First paragraph of introduction: On 20 July 2004 a single Asian tapeworm (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi) was collected from the intestine of a roundtail chub (Gila robusta) in the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument in northwestern Colorado. This fish (274 mm TL) was collected at river mile 24 and dissected in the field. A single tapeworm was removed from the intestine and preserved in ethanol. The tapeworm was later identified in the laboratory as B. acheilognathi by its characteristic arrow-shaped scolex (Poole et al. 1984). For the Green River Basin Landscape Conservation Design (GRB LCD) assessment, we mapped the vulnerability of the critical habitat for threatened and endangered fish species to oil and gas development for each 12-digit hydrologic unit. The following threatened and endangered fish species were included in this vulnerability assessment: Colorado pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius), Bonytail Chub (Gila elegans), Humpback chub (Gila cypha), and razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus). The upper Colorado River system is the habitat of several endangered fish: Kendall Warm Springs dace, Colorado squawfish, humpback chub, and bonytail chub. The single most important factor contributing to the decline of these species has been the construction and operation of dams and reservoirs, which have effected flow, temperature, chemistry, biota, and migration routes. Water depletion amounting to about 25% of the total has also had similar effects, particularly by eliminating the backwater nursery areas. We evaluated the role of major tributary streams for endangered fish recovery using a matrix approach based on quantitative information. However, the need for ranking tributaries for direct and indirect contributions (i.e., assignment of high, medium or low importance) required a more subjective approach. Some streams differed in actual and potential importance because barriers deny fish access to suitable habitat. We have not assigned relative importance to the different types of contributions; to a large extent that may involve policy issues better addressed by the Recovery Program.

These data were compiled for a study evaluating if rare or endangered fishes (e.g., Humpback Chub and Bonytail) can be transported in a shipping bag with 1-L of water and minimal sedative into remote locations. There were two components (laboratory trials and a field trial) of the study conducted in 2014 and 2017. Laboratory trials were conducted at the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Flagstaff, Arizona to evaluate three sedatives: AquaCalm, Tricaine-S, or Aqui-S 20E. Pilot trials were conducted with five fish (Bonytail) placed in a bag, where induction/recovery times, level of sedation, and fate after release were monitored for fish exposed to a sedative. Humpback chub (Gila cypha) are listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. In accordance with recovery goals finalized in 2002, population estimates were completed for adult humpback chub in Cataract Canyon on the Colorado River. The sampling was conducted from 2003 to 2005 with the objective of obtaining annual point estimates for humpback in the canyon. Sampling occurred between mid September and early November each of the three years of the study. Three sites were sampled for two nights on three occasions each year with approximately one week between sampling occasion. These data were compiled to evaluate the potential impact various environmental conditions may have on native fish populaitons through predation. Introduced warm-water sport fishes present a high predation risk for juvenile native fishes, but observations of juvenile native fish surviving and recruiting in some rare cases led us to question what environmental conditions might be responsible for these trends. These data were compiled to allow for a relative comparison of predation effectiveness between a suite of warm-water predators under a variety of environmental conditions. Mean numbers of prey fish surviving in replicated overnight laboratory predation trials were quantified.
