Surveys of the bathymetry and backscatter intensity of the sea floor of the Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS), offshore of New York and New Jersey, were carried out in 1996, 1998, and 2000 using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard ship Frederick G. Creed. The objective of the multiple echosounder surveys was to map the bathymetry and surficial sediments over time as dredged material was placed in the HARS to remediate contaminated sediments. Maps derived from the multibeam surveys show sea-floor bathymetry, shaded-relief bathymetry, and backscatter intensity (a measure of sea-floor texture and roughness) at a spatial resolution of 3 meters. The area was mapped by the U.S....
The Hudson Canyon begins on the outer continental shelf off the east coast of the United States at about 100-meters (m) water depth and extends offshore southeastward across the continental slope and rise. A multibeam survey was carried out in 2002 to map the bathymetry and backscatter intensity of the sea floor of the Hudson Canyon and adjacent slope and rise. The survey covered an area approximately 205 kilometers (km) in the offshore direction, extending from about 500 m to about 4,000 m water depth, and about 110 km in the alongshore direction, centered on the Hudson Canyon. The sea floor was mapped using a SeaBeam Instruments 2112 multibeam echosounder aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration...
From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

Approximately 95 square kilometers of area was mapped with multibeam sonar. The survey expanded the extent of mapping data collected by Solmar Hydro Inc. in 2013 under a contract with WindFloat Pacific. When added to the Solmar Hydro data the total area mapped is approximately 140 square kilometers, lying in Federal waters on the shelf offshore of Coos Bay of interest for renewable energy (OCS-P lease blocks 6523, 6524, 6573, 6574, 6623, 6624, 6673, and 6674). Water depths range from 300 to 500 meters and are within the effective depth range of the Reson 7111. The seabed in his area is composed of sand and mud, with rocky outcrops on tectonically uplifted features. The survey was conducted using 12 hour day operations...

This study took place in the Santa Barbara channel region of southern California, USA. The Santa Barbara channel is a well-known biogeographic transition zone and nearshore rocky reefs and kelp forests are home to many important commercial and recreationally fished species. In particular, rockfishes (genus Sebastes) are long-lived, piscivorous reef fishes that are important predators and are both commercially and recreationally fished. Kelp bass (Paralabrax clathratus), another important fish predator makes up a major sport fishery in southern CA. Finally, CA sheephead (Semicossyphus pulcher) are predators on grazing urchins and have been shown to exert top down control on kelp forests in the area (Hamilton and...

The Atlantic Beach artificial reef, located on the sea floor 3 nautical miles south of Atlantic Beach, New York in about 20 meters water depth, was built to create habitat for marine life. The reef was originally created by placing heavy materials such as tires, automobile bodies and other vehicles, barges, and rock from a dredging project on the sea floor. In 2000, the U.S. Geological Survey surveyed the area using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) ship Frederick G. Creed. The purpose of this multibeam survey, done in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when the Creed was in the New York region in April 2000, was to map the bathymetry and backscatter intensity...

The Sandy Hook artificial reef, located on the sea floor offshore of Sandy Hook, New Jersey was built to create habitat for marine life. The reef was created by the placement of heavy materials on the sea floor; ninety-five percent of the material in the Sandy Hook reef is rock. In 2000, the U.S. Geological Survey surveyed the area using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) ship Frederick G. Creed. The purpose of this multibeam survey, done in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when the Creed was in the New York region in April 2000, was to map the bathymetry and backscatter intensity of the sea floor in the area of the Sandy Hook artificial reef. The Hudson Shelf Valley is the submerged seaward extension of the ancestral Hudson River drainage system and is the largest physiographic feature on the Middle Atlantic continental shelf. The valley begins offshore of New York and New Jersey at about 30-meter (m) water depth, runs southerly and then southeasterly across the Continental Shelf, and terminates on the outer shelf at about 85-m water depth landward of the head of the Hudson Canyon. Portions of the 150-kilometer-long valley were surveyed in 1996, 1998, and 2000 using a Simrad EM1000 multibeam echosounder mounted on the Canadian Coast Guard ship Frederick G. Creed. The purpose of the multibeam echosounder surveys was to map the bathymetry and backscatter...

Survey records include water feature, state, publication title, data vintage, mission, online linkage to reports and datasets, collection methods, survey and survey product resolution, datums, geoid, and accuracy information if known. This database, identified as the USGS Inland Bathymetric and Topobathymetric Survey Inventory, v.3, has been approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although this database has been...

High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

From July 14-20, 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the City of Ithaca, New York, conducted a bathymetric survey of the Cayuga Inlet flood-control channel and selected mouths of tributaries to Cayuga Inlet and Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York. U.S. Geological Survey personnel collected bathymetric data using an acoustic Doppler current profiler. The survey plan generated over 25,000 water depths that were converted to bottom elevations by subtracting the depths from the water-surface elevations recorded by the USGS streamgage, Cayuga Inlet (Cayuga Lake) at Ithaca, N.Y. (station number 04233500), which was located within the surveyed reach. (Information on and data from this streamgage can be found...
