Online decision support tools are proliferating to serve the needs of environmental managers and conservation practitioners, but most are static after their creation. Aging software components and datasets can lead to rapid obsolescence or inoperable tools. In the Great Lakes basin, the Fishwerks webtool represents years of investment in database, website, and analytical development to support decisions about site selection for removing barriers to fish migrations. The website is approaching a critical juncture where usability assessments and long-term planning are needed to ensure its continued value to the user community. There are also technical needs for website refinement, database customization and management,...

Sky Island Alliance will develop science and conservation-based guidance to assist natural resource managers in responding to expected climate change and other stressors on springs ecosystems in sky island regions of the Desert LCC. The project will result in publication of an Arizona Springs Restoration Handbook, which will aid managers in directing limited resources to preserve these key water resources and species that depend on them.

This project will be focused on hosting 2-3 workshops in 2013 to train people to conduct the Springs Stewardship Institute’s spring assessment protocol and promote it as a standardized method. This will facilitate standardized data collection across the landscape that can contribute to a broad-scale inventory and assessment of springs, seeps, and aquatic resources throughout the Desert LCC.

The MPA Inventory is a comprehensive catalog that provides detailed information for existing marine protected areas in the United States. The inventory provides geospatial boundary information (in polygon format) and classification attributes that seek to define the conservation objectives, protection level, governance and related management criteria for all sites in the database. The comprehensive inventory of federal, state and territorial MPA sites provides governments and stakeholders with access to information to make better decisions about the current and future use of place-based conservation. The information also will be used to inform the development of the national system of marine protected areas as required...

This dataset represents wetlands on the Chugach National Forest, Alaska. The underlying data were received from US Fish and Wildlife Service. Wetlands interpreted stereoscopically and transferred to USGS base maps at 1:63,360 scale. Field verification/ground truthing in 8/79, 6/84, 8/85, 8/87, 6/88, 8/90. Total ground truthing time for the Chugach was 5 weeks. Coverage for the Chugach is only about 95% complete. There are no plans at this time to map these areas.

Invasive species have increasingly severe consequences for ecosystems and human communities alike. The ecological impacts of invasive species are often irreversible, and include the loss of native species and the spread of disease. Implications for human communities include damaged water transportation systems, reduced crop yields, reduced forage quality for livestock, and widespread tree death - which can lead to increases in wildfire and loss of biodiversity. Changing climate conditions may facilitate the spread of invasive species, making this a key management and conservation concern across the United States. This project will synthesize what we know about how climate change impacts the spread of invasive...

This dataset represents the estimated number of road and stream crossings per watershed compiled by the Conservation Biology Institute for the report "A GIS-based model for assessing conservation focal areas for the redwood ecosystem." For more details, see the full report at http://consbio.org/products/reports/a-gis-based-model-for-assessing-conservation-focal-areas-for-the-redwood-ecoregion. We are certain that not all existing roads and streams were accounted for on the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute quadrangle products we had access to (both electronic and paper form). Dates on these quadrangles covered approximately a 30year time span (late 1960s to late 1990s) and some were still in their provisional state....

This dataset represents freshwater streams on the Chugach National Forest, Alaska. Streams were digitized from 1:31,380 orthophoto quads. Estuarine channel types may extend beyond shoreline. Selected stream arcs on Cordova Ranger District updated October and November 2002. Presence of fish species and stream class were updated.

This table contains information about the amount of each threat analysis attribute, indicator and metric quantified for the 6th level Hydrological Unit (HUC12). These attributes were calculated for the entire HUC 12, the streams within the HUC 12, or the riparian corridor within the HUC 12. The attributes were calculated using ArcMap Tools. These data are provided by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) "as is" and may contain errors or omissions. Our goal for creating this digital reference collection is to provide regional aquatic biology labs with a graphic tool to aid in the identification and verification of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Most aquatic labs possess a collection of ‘reference’ specimens so that technicians/ taxonomists may compare and confirm specimens collected from a sample with expertly identified and verified type specimens of a particular taxa type. Unfortunately, specimens in these collections are often delicate and subject to damage, eventually rendering them unusable for verification purposes. Because of the unstable nature of individual type specimens, the Aquatic Experimental Lab at the Fort Collins Science Center has developed...
Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is an aquatic rhabdovirus causing severe disease in numerous freshwater and saltwater fish species. Initially the virus was been found to cause disease in European fish populations starting around 1938 and was first detected in North America in the late 1980s. Of the four VHSV genotypes (I, II, III, and IV), the North American subtype IVb isolates have a broad host range. To determine whether endangered pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus, are susceptible to VHSV-IVb infection, juvenile pallid sturgeon and two pallid sturgeon cell lines derived from skin and spleen tissue were tested. Detection of viable virus via a plaque assay and molecular detection of the virus results...

Executive Summary: Fisheries data compilation efforts for this project fell within two large watersheds in Arizona; the Verde River watershed (Desert LCC) and the Little Colorado River watershed (Southern Rockies LCC). We divided the project into two phases; 1) data compilation for the Arizona Game and Fish Fisheries Information Systems (FINS) and 2) a demonstration of FINS through model development and species distribution data. During phase 1, we compiled, cleaned, assigned National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) reach codes to historical data for 113,230 fish records in the Verde River watershed and 43,828 fish records from the Little Colorado River watershed. These records were standardized to meet the Arizona Game...

FY2017There is an increasing concern and need for the conservation of springsnails and other endemic mollusks and for conservation of the unique spring and springbrook habitats on which they depend (Hershler et al 2014; Abele 2011). Nationwide, several of these species have been listed as endangered or threatened under provisions of the ESA; others are candidates for federal listing or are undergoing review by USFWS for possible future listing actions. These species can be particularly susceptible to localized threats and specific knowledge necessary for effective site-based conservation is often limited or lacking.Springsnail are particularly susceptible to extinction because the entire population of any single...
Environmental conditions recorded at 2,256 Great Basin and Mojave Desert springs that were inventoried from the late 1980s into 2013 are summarized. These records provide information about individual springs and their spatial variability across the landscape. Insight into their changing condition is provided by records compiled at springs visited several times over more than 20 years. Although this summary considers a small proportion of springs in this region, it provides broad insight into their size, basic water chemistry, and conditions that are indicative of springs over a large portion of the southwestern US.
