Samples were collected from Willow Creek Lake approximately monthly during May through September by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality as a part of the Ambient Lake Monitoring Program since at least 1989. Lake samples were analyzed for several constituents, including nutrients and chlorophyll. Though several different station identification numbers have been used over the course of monitoring, the general location of sampling corresponds to the deep site referenced in Rus and others (2018).
This child item data set provides high-resolution, nearshore, spatial water-quality data collected from Owasco Lake, New York, on June 26 and October 8, 2019. All data are reported as raw measured values. Continuous water-quality monitors were mounted to a boat at approximately 0.5-meters below the water surface and used to measure nitrate, chlorophyll fluorescence (fChl), fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM), dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, phycocyanin fluorescence (fPC), turbidity, pH, and temperature.

These data sets were created in support of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) for the Delaware River Basin pilot study (Eberts, Wagner, and Woodside, 2019). The NGWOS utilizes real-time data, improved computational capabilities, and new technologies such as the rapid deployment of unmanned aerial vehicle's (UAV) and autonomous underwater vehicle's (AUV) to provide information on water quantity and quality, in more locations, quickly and efficiently (Eberts, Wagner, and Woodside, 2019). Combined with advanced modeling applications, the NGWOS will be an important tool for water-resource managers and emergency management. Water-quality and bathymetric data were measured...

Chemistry data were collected or compiled from stream water, lake water, and groundwater. Stream water samples were collected more frequently to capture the range of streamflow conditions. Discretely collected samples were analyzed for nitrogen content (total Kjeldahl nitrogen and nitrate plus nitrite nitrogen) and phosphorus (total phosphorus and phosphate as phosphorus). A subset of samples were analyzed for nitrogen and oxygen isotopes associated with nitrate and phosphate, respectively, to identify nutrient sources in Willow Creek Lake.
The retention or release of nutrients into the water column from sediment, also known as internal loading, is another source of nutrients to the lake water column. Sediment cores collected from Willow Creek Lake in September 2013 and June 2014 were incubated for 7 days to assess potential for sediment to produce or consume water column phosphorus under aerobic (oxic) and anaerobic (anoxic) conditions using techniques similar to Penn and others (2000); the oxic conditions served as a control and the anoxic conditions represented typical lake sediment environments. Phosphate as phosphorus and total dissolved phosphorus release rates (milligrams phosphorus per square meter per day) were estimated by dividing the change...

Surface-Water Quality Monitoring,
High frequency water-quality measurements were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey within Willow Creek Reservoir located in Heppner, Oregon. All measurements were taken at 1.5 feet below the surface with a YSI EXO2 multiparameter sonde. Information collected include location, time, water temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, total chlorophyll, blue-green algae phycocyanin, and turbidity. The measurements were collected while boating around the reservoir at about 2.5 miles per hour.

In 2015-2018, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes Restoration Initiative investigated the biodegradation of microcystins in source waters and sand filters from drinking-water plants in the Western Lake Erie Basin. Four source waters and three sand filtrate samples were collected from the intakes and sand filters of Lake Erie drinking-water plants and transported to the USGS Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory, where investigators set up microcosms to enrich for and identify indigenous bacteria capable of degrading microcystins. Quality control samples were set up in the microcosms to check analyses and included positive controls, negative controls,...
This data release contains a national compilation of state-level qualitative and quantitative guidance for a variety of environmental indicators that are used to identify the presence of a harmful algal bloom (HAB) in freshwater ecosystems. These include qualitative guidelines based on visual or olfactory signals, as well as quantitative guidelines based on cyanotoxin concentrations, algal biomass density, and chlorophyll a concentrations. Many states in the United States have adopted guidelines based on recommendations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the World Health Organization. However, a few states have also developed their own guidelines. We are specifically focused on fresh, inland waters...

An interdisciplinary and multiagency study was conducted in southern Florida to examine harmful algal bloom (HAB) dynamics on the Caloosahatchee River, which drains from Lake Okeechobee to the west into the Gulf of Mexico. Using in-situ mesocosm experiments, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate, and urea were altered from ambient conditions to determine the effects on cyanotoxin biosynthesis gene presence and quantity as measured via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Eight experiments were conducted seasonally from May 2019 through July 2021 at the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam. The experimental installations consisted of three floating metal cradles each containing four opaque fiberglass chambers filled with...

An interdisciplinary and multiagency study was completed to understand harmful algal bloom dynamics by describing the spatial and temporal patterns and drivers of phytoplankton community structure and cyanotoxin and cyanotoxin-gene concentrations in Lake Okeechobee and Okeechobee Waterways in South Florida. The Waterway includes the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers which drain the lake westward to the Gulf of Mexico and eastward to the Atlantic Ocean, respectively. Algae and cyanobacteria play crucial roles in aquatic ecosystems, but under favorable environmental conditions certain taxa experience population growth booms resulting in harmful algal blooms. Cyanobacteria are considered the most common bloom-formers...

As harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase in magnitude and duration worldwide, they are becoming an expanding threat to marine wildlife. Over the past decade, domoic acid (DA) and saxitoxin (STX) have been increasingly problematic bicoastally in the United States. We investigated pooled seabird mortality data from opportunistic sampling events between 2007-2018, across three states, to examine the patterns and role of DA and STX in seabird mortality events from the continental United States. Patterns in DA and STX levels and affected tissue type were reviewed, and two specific accounts of localized and pervasive event types were examined. There has been increased toxin detection with expanded tissue testing during...

Streamflow was measured at the three largest inflows (the Foster, NT, and ST sites) of Willow Creek Lake and at the outflow of the lake. Flow data were typically available at a 15-minute frequency, but generally were summarized as daily means. Flow data for the Foster, NT, and outflow sites were provided by the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NDNR) and were estimated using stage-flow relations applied to measured stage following protocols described by Kennedy (1983). Flow at the ST site was measured by the U.S. Geological Survey using an indirect rating curve with water levels monitored continuously by a submersible pressure transducer and periodic streamflow measurements collected using a Parshall flume...
This data release presents two calibration datasets that relate aquatic reflectance derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery with algal bloom conditions in the Brownlee Reservoir on the Idaho Oregon border. These datasets were developed to evaluate remote sensing methods for identifying algal blooms in Brownlee Reservoir like those from July 2022 that are illustrated in field photo (left) and satellite imagery (right) in “Picture1.png”. The first calibration dataset includes satellite-based spectra paired with chlorophyll-a concentrations in micrograms per liter analyzed by the Bureau of Reclamation Soil and Water Laboratory with standard method 10200 H.2 on water samples collected within 2 m of the surface by...
